You have already learned how to represent parts of a whole with a fraction. Today you will learn how fractions are related to division.

How can you divide 2 muffins among 3 people equally? What fraction shows the part of 1 muffin each person gets? Draw pictures to show your answers. (There is more than one correct way!)

Draw 2 equal-sized circles on a piece of paper. Each circle will represent a muffin. Divide each circle into 3 equal parts.

9. When you see the line of a fraction, it means “divided by.”
You can also write this by thinking of division. Dividing 2 muffins for 3 people is the same as saying 2 ÷ 3. 2 ÷ 3 = Saying 2 ÷ 3 is the same as saying two-thirds.
