1 Instructions Objective 1 – Enable students to become familiar with the terms to describe the parts of speech as covered in the previous literacy exercise. Objective 2 – to be imaginative and create an interesting or amusing sentence by using the correct parts of speech. This will operate best with pupils working individually, although some may well need help being reminded of what the various parts of speech are. Refresh them on the terms by recapping the previous literacy session, using the next slide. This works like the consequences game. Everyone, including the teacher, has a piece of paper. At the top of this, they write a definite or indefinite article (a or the). Try to get students to explain the terms before giving them the words a or the, though. Then add an adjective of their choice. Fold the top of the paper over so that the words cannot be seen and pass the paper on to the person next to you. Follow the parts of speech that are to be written each time on the 3rd slide. Some, such as point 3, may be more challenging and require group input. When you reach point 9 and everyone has read their sentences individually, share the best/funniest/most interesting. Discuss what made them so. If you have time, turn your pieces of paper over and try the activity again.

2 Parts of speech Noun = a word which names something (e.g. Coalville, John, table, pen) Verb = a doing / action word (e.g. to run, to eat, to speak, to think, to be, to have) Adjective = a word that describes a noun (e.g. red, blue, big, expensive, clever, sad) Adverb = a word that describes a verb, these often end “ly” (e.g. quickly, happily, cheerfully, sadly) Pronoun = these replace a noun and come before a verb (I, you, he, she, it, we, they) Article = these always come before a noun (definite ‘the’ or indefinite ‘a’) A preposition = a word that describes the position, place or time of an object (eg at, in, under, before)

3 Write an article and an adjective. Fold over the paper and pass it on.
Write a second adjective. Fold over the paper and pass it on. Write a common noun. Fold over the paper and pass it on. Write a verb in the third person present tense. Fold over the paper and pass it on . Write an adverb. Fold over the paper and pass it on . Write a preposition of place. Fold over the paper and pass it on . Open up your paper and read your sentence.
