1 Volunteer Workshop Spring 2019

2 Let’s Talk Talk to 2 people. What is your name?
Do you have summer plans? What would you like to know more about (regarding teaching, language, culture, citizenship)?

3 Now stop talking! How do I maximize student talk?
Keep directions simple. Consider the difference between the following instructions: a. I think what we’ll do now is some practice of the key words we just learned. To do that, I’m going to ask you two questions, and I’d like you to answer them. Is that alright? b. Let’s practice these words. I’ll ask you two questions. 38 words versus 9 words

4 ...maximizing student talking time
2. Avoid explanations Try to prompt your students with questions to help lead them to the answer on their own. This both increases their speaking time and makes use of their critical thinking skills. What could you say if your student asks, “What does biweekly mean?”

5 ...maximizing student talking time
3. Insist on full sentences every time. For boosting student talking time, full sentences are key. They also force your students to think about sentence structure. Try associating a gesture with a reminder to speak in full sentences (spreading my left and right hands apart).

6 Language Partners warm-up activities - ideas to try Using the internet to lesson plan Tips for different learning styles

7 Warm-ups What is a warm-up? What is the purpose?

8 Guess the News Story Show picture(s) of week’s top news stories.
Student talks about the picture and everything she/he knows about the story.

9 (insert news image)

10 Written Conversation Write a question on a piece of paper.
Your student writes her/his answer. Continue the conversation for 5 minutes. Talk about vocabulary, grammar, or errors in the writing.

11 Post It Mania Write the name of something in the room.
Student sticks the note to that object. Repeat several times. Call the items out and have your student bring the note back to you.

12 Index Cards Sentence Halves: Put half a sentence on each card. Students match the two parts in order to make a complete sentence. Memory: Play concentration with vocabulary and definitions. You can encourage your students to use the vocabulary in sentences, as well. Word Order Game: Put lots of different parts of speech in a bag (verbs, nouns, prepositions, adjectives, etc) and have students come up with as many distinct sentences as possible.

17 Tips for different learning styles

18 Kinesthetic Learner a movement and touch-based learning style.
do not learn best by being lectured to or having a task explained. need to do it themselves in order to fully understand the process. will focus more easily if they have objects to manipulate instead of always using pencil and paper.

19 Swat the Sound Arrange the letter cards face up on a table
Say one of the sounds Have your student “swat” the sound with a (clean) fly swatter Could be a competition if you have two students

20 Cut Up Compound Words Print out or write compound words on cardstock.
Have your student read the word, then cut it in two. Example: downtown = down + town Have your student mix up the word parts, then reassemble them

21 Charades Charades is a classic game and an excellent choice for tactile-kinesthetic learners. a very versatile game that you can adapt to suit your language teaching needs. For example, you can play charades to practice animals, sports or even musical instruments.

22 Realia objects and material from everyday life, especially when used as teaching aids.
