Every second year daimyo forced to live in EDO (cost of two house expensive) Daimyo also had to leave family member in EDO in their absence (as a hostage) Sharing power: Bakuhan- 2 levels Shogunate: control over federal affairs (foreign trade) Daimyo: control over local matters Strict laws Laws established for Shogunate to tell Daimyo how to live their lives (marriage and dress) Also required Daimyo to spend money on projects (building roads)

Strict rules governed the behavior of each class Rules dictating what type of clothing you could or could not wear Rules regarding houses and possessions Rules regarding how to bow to another person Anyone who disobeyed was met with harsh punishment The Samurai Well respected class like European knights They were NOT ALLOWED to take place in business or trade Live by a code of honor : thrifty and simple life Only samurai allowed to have a sword They had little choice about this lifestyle

Important because they harvested the food for everyone Strict laws governed every aspect of their lives -not allowed to smoke, drink rice wine or leave without permission Seen as a lower class Artisans Artisans son was restricted to his fathers class and particular craft - sword making, paper, porcelain Extremely skilled yet seen as a lower class than peasants because thy required the raw materials provided by the peasant class

Officially at the bottom of the social order (produced nothing) Bought items from artisans to trade and sell Stored rice which was used as currency (much like a banker) Their business could be taken away if they showed off their wealth or criticized their government Women in Edo Society The class a woman was born into dictated her role in society In overall hierarchy of society women were always considered under men They DID NOT have legal existence as they were not allowed to own property Not a slave to their husband but a servant

Anyone who disposed of animal carcasses (butcher, leather tanners) Some entertainers (freak show-bearded lady) Anyone with leprosy The Ainu Not allowed into Japanese society until 1997 when their culture and heritage were finally recognized. However, the Ainu felt the legislation did not go far enough to recognize years of discrimination and assimilation

Honor and Duty Towards a Harmonious Society Confucianism
‘social controls’ are the rules and customs in a society that regulate behavior of people The purpose of these controls is to maintain order in society Confucianism Brought over by Chinese Buddhist Monks Teaching that every person had a proper place in society and if everyone accepted these obligations there would be peace and harmony “what you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others.” Stressed the need for rituals, proper behavior and compassion

The Samurai keep everything under control within Japanese society Samurai organized lower class into 5 families called Goningumi Everyone in the group was eligible for punishment if one person disobeyed, did not work hard enough or showed disrespect Members of the group would have to help each other Do 1b on page 299 ‘over to you’

Southern Barbarians Portuguese traders came and landed on the Southern shores of Japan, later Dutch, British, Spanish traders also came. Christian missionaries also came to Japan They each had different worldviews and cultural policies Due to renaissance the Europeans had a different view of individuality, religion & social structure Answer the ‘Think it Through’ on page 300.

New kind of Belief St. Francis Xavier Jesuits arrived in 1549 and began converting upper class to Christianity The Portuguese sent Franciscan priests to convert lower class Japanese were a mix of Shinto worship and Kami Both religions had ETHICAL CODES by which to live life Christian idea of one God was a new idea to the Japanese Japanese believed they should be loyal to the daimyo, emperor and shogun where as Christians dedicate their loyalty to God in heaven
