Salvation’s Storm Psalm 22
March 28, 2010

1. The Storm Rises

Psalm 22: 1-5 1 My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning. 2 O my God, I cry by day, but You do not answer; And by night, but I have no rest. 3 Yet You are holy, O You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel.     4 In You our fathers trusted; They trusted and You delivered them. 5 To You they cried out and were delivered; In You they trusted and were not disappointed.

Habakkuk 1:13 13 Your eyes are too pure to approve evil, And You can not look on wickedness with favor Why do You look with favor On those who deal treacherously? Why are You silent when the wicked swallow up Those more righteous than they?

2 Cor. 5:21 21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Mt. 27:45-46 45 Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour. 46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"

2. The Storm Rages

Psalm 22: 6-21 6 But I am a worm and not a man,  A reproach of men and despised by the people. 7 All who see me sneer at me; They separate with the lip, they wag the head, saying,  8 "Commit yourself to the LORD; let Him deliver him; Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.” 9 Yet You are He who brought me forth from the womb;  You made me trust when upon my mother's breasts. 10 Upon You I was cast from birth;  You have been my God from my mother's womb. 11 Be not far from me, for trouble is near; For there is none to help.

12 Many bulls have surrounded me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me. 13 They open wide their mouth at me, As a ravening and a roaring lion. 14 I am poured out like water, And all my bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It is melted within me. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And my tongue cleaves to my jaws; And You lay me in the dust of death. 16 For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me;

18 They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots.19 But You, O LORD, be not far off; O You my help, hasten to my assistance. 20 Deliver my soul from the sword, My only life from the power of the dog. 21 Save me from the lion's mouth; From the horns of the wild oxen You answer me.

A. The Darkness of Reproach

Psalm 22: 6-13 6 But I am a worm and not a man, A reproach of men and despised by the people. 7 All who see me sneer at me; They separate with the lip, they wag the head, saying, 8 "Commit yourself to the LORD; let Him deliver him; Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him."  9 Yet You are He who brought me forth from the womb; You made me trust when upon my mother's breasts.

10 Upon You I was cast from birth; You have been my God from my mother's womb. 11 Be not far from me, for trouble is near;   For there is none to help. 12 Many bulls have surrounded me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me. 13 They open wide their mouth at me, As a ravening and a roaring lion.

Mt. 27:39-44 39And those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads 40and saying, "You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross." 41In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying,

42"He saved others; He cannot save Himself He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43"HE TRUSTS IN GOD; LET GOD RESCUE Him now, IF HE DELIGHTS IN HIM; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'" 44The robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words.

B. The Darkness of Pain

Psalm 22: 14-15 14 I am poured out like water, And all my bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It is melted within me.     15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd,  And my tongue cleaves to my jaws;  And You lay me in the dust of death.

Jn. 19:28 28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, "I am thirsty."

C. The Darkness of Indignity

Psalm 22: 16-18 16 For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me; 18 They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots.

Mt. 27:35 35And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots.

3. The Storm Recedes

Psalm 22: 19-21 19 But You, O LORD, be not far off;  O You my help, hasten to my assistance. 20 Deliver my soul from the sword,  My only life from the power of the dog. 21 Save me from the lion's mouth;  From the horns of the wild oxen You answer me.

Rom. 3:23-26 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 25whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; 26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

4. The Storm Resolves

Psalm 22: 22-31 22 I will tell of Your name to my brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You. 23 You who fear the LORD, praise Him; All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him,  And stand in awe of Him, all you descendants of Israel.     24 For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted;  Nor has He hidden His face from him;  But when he cried to Him for help, He heard. 25 From You comes my praise in the great assembly; I shall pay my vows before those who fear Him. 26 The afflicted will eat and be satisfied;  Those who seek Him will praise the LORD Let your heart live forever!

27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, And all the families of the nations will worship before You. 28 For the kingdom is the LORD'S  And He rules over the nations. 29 All the prosperous of the earth will eat and worship,  All those who go down to the dust will bow before Him,  Even he who cannot keep his soul alive. 30 Posterity will serve Him;  It will be told of the Lord to the coming generation. 31 They will come and will declare His righteousness  To a people who will be born, that He has performed it.

A. The Dawn of Restoration

Psalm 22: 22-24 22 I will tell of Your name to my brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.

Heb. 1:1-4 1 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, 2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. 3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.

Heb. 2:11-13 11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, 12 saying, "I WILL PROCLAIM YOUR NAME TO MY BRETHREN, IN THE MIDST OF THE CONGREGATION I WILL SING YOUR PRAISE." 13 And again,"I WILL PUT MY TRUST IN HIM ”And again,"BEHOLD, I AND THE CHILDREN WHOM GOD HAS GIVEN ME."

B. The Dawn of Worship

Psalm 22: 25-29 25 From You comes my praise in the great assembly;  I shall pay my vows before those who fear Him.

Rev. 5:9 9 And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.

C. The Dawn of Redemption

Psalm 22: 30-31 30 Posterity will serve Him; It will be told of the Lord to the coming generation. 31 They will come and will declare His righteousness To a people who will be born, that He has performed it.

Jn. 19:30 30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
