There are 4 cells, and the area of each cell represents the frequency of each of the 4 unique combinations of variable levels. The “standardized residual” is the residual divided by its SD. Therefore, the standardized residual rating represents the degree to which the 2 categorical variables are independent of each other, in units of SD. Colors represent the deviation in each cell from those expected from the null hypothesis that the 2 variables are not associated, with the color intensity indicating the degree of “surprise” associated with rejection of the null hypothesis (
