Did you know? Depression is disorder affecting over 18 million people in the U.S. The on set of depression can begin at an early age, and is common among adolescents. It’s estimated that 8-12% of high-school aged youth will have depression. Adolescent girls are more likely than boys to be diagnosed with depression.

Warning Signs of Depression
Feeling more irritable or angry than usual Losing or gaining a significant amount of weight (not due to diet) Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much Feeling sluggish, restless, or anxious Feeling worthless or guilty Not being able to concentrate or make decisions Thinking about ending your life Self-harm behaviors Feeling helpless or hopeless If you experience at least 5 or more of these symptoms most of the day for at least two weeks, you may be depressed.

STEPS TO TAKE FOR HELP Three steps teens can take:
Talk to your parents or talk to an adult you trust. Don’t be alone. Take your friend’s actions seriously. Encourage your friend to seek professional help, accompany if necessary. Three steps parents can take: Get help (medical or mental health) Support your child/friend (listen, avoid undue critism, remain connected). Become informed (library, local support group, Internet).

Why? Depression does not go away on its own!
If you are depressed, it is important to begin treatment as soon as possilbe. Most people who are depressed begin to feel better after a few months of therapy and/or taking medication.
