The March Revolution You will be given a character from Russia 1914 – 1917. Watch the following presentation and work out: Why these events happened How your character was involved in the 1st Russian Revolution (aka The March Revolution)!

Russia declared war on Germany Czar-popular >1m Russian soldiers dead Russia could not produce enough weapons to supply soldiers

Shortages of food, coal & industrial materials in cities
Prices & factories closed Gov’t blamed Czar goes to front lines Czarina & Rasputin left in charge Rasputin persuaded the Czarina to replace officials he did not like Food supply in cities 1914 – 1915 September 1915

Winter 1916 7th March 1917 8th March 1917 Bad winter
Little food or fuel got into Petrograd. Bread shortage Beginning of “March Revolution” Workers went on strike Women joined demonstrations Protestors demanded food, fuel & a new govt. March 8th-200,000 workers stormed the streets

Czar ordered army to fire on protestors
Many soldiers refused & joined demonstrations Soldiers & workers marched to Duma to demand that it take control of Russia. Czar tried to get back to Petrograd but RR workers stopped him. Czar forced to flee. Czar Nicholas II abdicates his throne. 12th March 1917 15th March 1917 March 12th-soldiers obeyed at first them sided with the demonstrators

With your character card, write a letter to a friend or family member in the United States that depicts : Your feelings toward the Czar Your feelings about the war How your country is being run You must consider the knowledge your character would have and the way they were likely to react to the different events and characters. You may be asked to share these.
