Conjugate regular –ar verbs in the present tense Success Criteria Translate -AR verb infinitives to English Explain the steps of verb conjugation Identify the six present-tense -AR verb endings Use subject pronouns and verb endings to conjugate verbs

3 The Infinitives of Verbs
In Spanish, there are verbs that end in –AR, -ER, and –IR. When verbs have these endings, they are in their infinitive form, or the “to ___” form. The infinitive is the form of the verb that you would find in a Spanish dictionary. Here are some –AR verbs in the infinitive. Estudiar Enseñar Necesitar Tomar To study To teach To need To take

4 Verb Conjugation o amos as áis a an I we you y’all they, you all
We must change, or conjugate, the infinitive of the verb to tell who is doing the action. Here are the steps for conjugating regular –AR verbs in the present tense: Remove the –AR ending Add the following endings for the singular and plural subject pronouns: o amos I we as áis you y’all a an he, she, you, it they, you all

5 -Ar Verbs In Spanish, the subject pronoun (yo, tú, etc.) does not always have to be used because the verb endings tell who is doing the action. Use the subject pronoun to emphasize who is doing the action or to clarify if the subject is not obvious by the verb ending. The subject may not be obvious for the verb forms of él, ella, usted, and ellos, ellas, ustedes.

10 -Ar Verbs When a verb is conjugated in the present tense, it can be translated to mean that the subject… does the action Yo enseño español = I teach Spanish. is in the process of doing the action Él toma el autobús = He is taking the bus. or will do the action in the near future Nosotros estudiamos para el examen mañana = We will study for the test tomorrow.

11 -Ar Verbs Some verbs, such as necesitar, can be followed by other verbs. Example: Tú necesitas estudiar. You need to study. In this case, the first verb is conjugated and the second verb is in the infinitive. “When two verbs go walking, the first does the talking.”
