Self Starter * 40 Points * 1/22/2014 Today’s Learning Objective and Questions
Today’s Learning Objective: Investigate the properties of water: Exists in all three states, dissolves many substances, exhibits adhesion and cohesion, density of solid vs liquid water Essential Question: Describe an ecosystem. Answer: (Answers may Vary) A place where biotic and abiotic things interact.

Cornell Notes Assignment [ 4]
Water can dissolve many substances. This property of water allows substances to be carried into underground water supplies. Adhesion is another property of water that allows it to form drops. An oil spill at sea often damages birds and sea mammals but fish are relatively unaffected. Fish are not affected because oil is less dense than water and floats on the surface where birds are.
8
Cornell Notes Assignment [ 4]
Water is a very unusual substance because it is less dense when it is solid. The most environmentally friendly way to clean the pollution out of streams is to find the source of the pollution and require it to stop.
9
Cornell Notes Assignment [ 4]
Mining will reduce pH and add heavy metals to stream water. Sea water is not as valuable as fresh water because if salt is in the water it reduces the number of ways people can use it. Communities in Utah are building new dam’s and reservoirs, building new pipelines and drilling for water to solve water shortages.

11
The least expensive way for communities to deal with water shortages is to clean their dirty water.
The use that requires the most water is farming.

Student Read The Jordan River has been straightened and its banks protected to provide flood control. Birds and wildlife prefer wandering rivers because they provide wetlands and slow moving water. How will communities along the river decide how to manage this river?
14
Cornell Notes Assignment [ 4]
Communities along the Jordan River decide how to manage the river by involving community and state leaders so they can study the issues and hold public meetings.
