1 OSI MAPGENIE MapGenie is an online service which provides access to various Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSI) mapping series It includes historic 19th century maps, colour aerial mapping, Discovery series maps and current large-scale mapping

2 UCD Library

3 Use your UCD Connect details to login to MapGenie
Click OK – MapGenie can only be used in UCD locations

4 First view is of a general basemap of Ireland
The premium basemap (this has no watermark) is the default setting. Click on public basemap to view this version instead. Left click on the circle on the scale bar and slide it up and down to see the map at different pre-set scales You can only view the map at one of the following pre-set scales: 1: :25,000 1:400,000 1: :50,000 1:600,000 1: :100,000 1:1,250,000 1:10,000 1:200,000 1:2,500,000 1:4,000,000

5 View at 1:50,000 View at 1:2,500 View at 1:10,000 View at 1:1000
These four examples are from the Public Basemap viewer View at 1:50,000 View at 1:2,500 View at 1:10,000 View at 1:1000

6 Click on the globe to return to the full view of the whole map of Ireland
To zoom into a specific area we do the following. In this example we are looking for Enniscorthy in Wexford. Left click on the + symbol. Then on the map left click, hold the mouse button down and drag to draw a box, release the mouse button when your box is drawn.

7 View Enniscorthy with the scale at 1:10,000
Then from the Layer List ( a layer is a specific map series) left click in the checkbox for each series one at a time. Only one checkbox should be ticked at a time. Click again in the box to remove a tick.

8 The last series in the list is the historic 25inch map
In order to see this map at its correct view you need to slide the scale bar to 1:2500. The 25inch map is only visible when you set it to either 1:5000 or 1:2500 (the 1:2500 option gives better detail)

9 Discovery mapping viewed at 1:10,000
Some other map series only become visible at certain scales In order to see Discovery mapping (published at 1:50,000 scale) you need to slide the scale bar to at least 1:10,000 In this example, Discovery mapping is not available to view at 1:5000 scale Discovery mapping viewed at 1:10,000

10 You can combine the hybrid series maps (which are current) with some of the other map series.
This example shows the hybrid transport layers overlaid on the historic colour 6inch map series You will need to use the scale bar to zoom in and out – not every combination works though

11 This example shows the hybrid water, hybrid buildings layers and the current ortho (aerial photography from 2012) The scale bar is at 1:5000

12 By pointing the cursor onto a building or any location you can get it’s co-ordinates
The Easting and Northing co-ordinates for the location are shown in the bottom left hand of the screen

13 http://www. osi. ie/calculators/converter_index. asp
Type the numbers into ITM boxes and click Convert to get the location in Latitude & Longitude

14 With the Draw tool you can take measurements
Left click on the palette icon which is on the toolbar When the draw box opens click on the Draw Line symbol Click in the Show Measurements checkbox In Distance Units use the pull-down menu to choose your preferred measurement unit

15 Point your cursor on any corner of your building and left click
Move your cursor to the next corner and left click once. Do the same for next corners. On the last corner double-click to finish. Move your cursor away and the measurement will appear.

16 To add text to your map click on the A symbol
Enter text into the blank box You can change colour, font, size, etc Move the cursor to where you would like to add the text and left click To remove all text and outlines click on Clear Drawings

17 Left click in the historic 25inch checkbox
Transparency allows you view one mapping series layer over the basemap. This is useful for comparing how an area has changed over time. Left click in the historic 25inch checkbox Next click on the down arrow Left click on the word Transparency

18 Left click the button on the slider and move it along from 0% up to 60% to see the historic map appear over the base map You can use the address box at top right of the screen – but it’s not restricted to just Irish information. Tip: Adding the province helps locate the right address

19 Maps CANNOT be saved or stored in MapGenie
You must take a screen grab or a print while you have your map on screen Use the print icon to get the option of creating a Title for your map Printing seems to work best when using Firefox All maps, except the Premium Basemap, print with an OSI watermark It’s NOT possible to find map dates in MapGenie. You can find exact dates for the 25” and 6” maps by following instructions given on this page: libguides.ucd.ie/findingmaps/mapshistIreland
