OUR RESEARCH ENTERPISE We R1
2
The Carnegie Classification Of Institutions of Higher Education
In 1970, the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education developed a classification system to support its research and policy analysis. The first Carnegie Classification, based on empirical data regarding colleges and universities, was published in 1973. It was developed to facilitate “apples-to-apples” comparisons in the study of higher education institutions.

Moving to the next level
The Statler College is not only the key to West Virginia University’s R1Status, but is central to the economic future of the State of West Virginia Our “Moonshot” should be for the Statler College to become a top 20 Engineering School in Research Innovation and Commercialization by 2030 Success will require that we diversify and build new niche areas of significant strength rivaling fossil energy
17
CHALLENGES Increased concern about technological competitiveness
Increasing competition for faculty talent Constrained resources Alignment with trends
