Complutense University of Madrid: History
The Complutense University of Madrid traces its origins to the Estudio de Escuelas Generales de Alcalá, founded by King Sancho IV of Castille in 1293. 1499: Cardinal Cisneros founds “Complutum”, the predecessor of today’s university, in the town of Alcalá de Henares. 1509: The University has five faculties. 1836: Under the reign of Isabel II, the university is moved to Madrid where it took the name Universidad Central. 1927: Construction begins on the Moncloa campus on land granted by King Alfonso XIII. 1970: The Central University is renamed Complutense and the Somosaguas Campus is created. The Complutense University is now the largest university in Madrid

Complutense University of Madrid
The Complutense University is the oldest public University in Madrid (1499) and one of the largest in Spain. It has two campuses and 26 faculties. The Complutense Library is the largest university library in Spain and the second largest library in the country after National Library of Spain. The library is a support service to learning, teaching, research and the other institutional goals of the University.

COMPLUTENSE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY: STRUCTURE
The library structure is decentralized which means individual libraries hosted by the Faculties and one Head Office who coordinates all of them. We have these main areas: Management. Central Services: they are responsible for the unification of criteria, coordination and standardization of processes and services of Faculty Libraries. Faculty libraries: there are 32 libraries located in two different campuses and also 2 important library buildings: Historical Library “Marques de Valdecilla”: responsible for the management, preservation and dissemination of bibliographic heritage of the UCM Library “Maria Zambrano”: opened in 2011 with 3000 seats for reading and with capacity to house three million volumes

Our Library offers a wide variety of services which are intended to facilitate the access and dissemination of all information resources belonging to the University legacy, as well as to contribute to the processes of learning. CISNE: It offers a simple and an advanced search, we can also search by document type (ebook collection, electronic journals, databases…) or use other resources such as the Complutense Digital Collection.

The vast majority of the library system’s holdings are listed in the online catalog accessible on the Internet which is called CISNE. CISNE: It offers a simple and an advanced search, we can also search by document type (ebook collection, electronic journals, databases…) or use other resources such as the Complutense Digital Collection.

World's largest library cooperative worldwide, created and governed by and for libraries. Non-profit international organization → profits reinvested in library research and development of their cooperative services. Advantages as a technological partner of libraries. Based on WorldCat, OCLC provides libraries with powerful technological tools. Young ILS software with no dependencies of previous systems. Allows an effective shared cataloguing in WC, with common authorities files and LOD technology. Integral management of electronic and printed collections. Fosters to share and reuse information on collections, providers and licenses, and even to freely share local digital collections. Neutral with respect to contents → respects libraries’ autonomy.

The Complutense University Library participates in different international Library Projects such as: 2006: Google Books Project 2010: HathiTrust Digital Library 2015: Catalogue in WorldCat & ILL WMS : Implementation of WMS as ILS “Google Library Project”. In 2006, our Library signed a cooperation agreement with Google to digitize all of the Complutense Library Collections free of copyright. Those books can be easily searched from Google, Hathi Trust (world’s largest digital library) and Europeana (Europe’s largest cultural website). Since 2006 to the present time, more than volumes have been digitized. Thanks to this agreement, the mission of preservation and dissemination of bibliographic heritage of Complutense Library has been significantly improved.
