3 Architectural Culture & Market
Agenda Liquid & Powder Coatings: Architectural Culture & Market Application Method Durability (AAMA / Qualicoat) Color Resins Characteristics: Multiple vs. Single Coat Metallic Flop (Directionality) VOC Examples TODAY WE ARE GOING TO COVER SEVERAL TOPICS TO INTRODUCE COATINGS SPECIFICATIONS. IT’S IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENT OPTIONS THERE ARE TO COAT METALS: Liquid and powder coatings have particular characteristics to each and use a variety of nomenclatures to achieve similar results; high performance coating of aluminium components of a building. This seminar will update the design and construction community on the latest technologies to achieve AAMA compliance, improve finishes options, define nomenclature and discuss other topics that will help to correctly specify coatings.

4 Architectural Metal Products
Decorative Metal Railings Metal Roof & Wall Panels Aluminum Doors, Frames, Windows, Entrances & Storefronts Elevator Components Aluminum Curtain Walls Metal-Framed Skylights Moynihan Sation NYC Nottingham Library THESE ARE EXAMPLES OF METAL PRODUCT END UP COATED WITH METAL COATINGS. TWO MAIN CATEGORIES: ALUMINIUM AND/OR STEEL, FOR THIS PRESENTATION WE ARE GOING TO FOCUS ON ALUMINIUM. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO SPECIFY FOR THESE RANGE OF PRODUCTS? ON EACH SINGLE SPEC SECTION? OR WRITING A FINISH SPEC

5 Architectural Metal Products
Flashing, Coping & Trims Louvers and Vents Metal Fencing, Bollards, Wastebaskets & Outdoor Accessories Metal Lamps & Posts Furniture & Cabinets Metal Building Systems Richmond VA City Hall DURING DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATIONS WILL REACH DIFFERENT SUPPLY CHAINS TO GET THE BUILDING PRODUCTS. IT’S IMPORTANT TO THINK AND PLAN TO DETERMINE PERFORMANCE AND COLOR FOR THE COMPONENTS OF THE BUILDING. HOW MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF FENCES OR FAÇADE COMPONENTS WILL YOUR BUILDING HAVE? AS AN EXAMPLE LOUVERS HAVE A LONG AND COMPLICATED CONTRACT CHAIN, AS THEY HAVE CURTAIN WALL LOUVERS, MECHANICAL LOVERS, DECORATIVE, POWER VENTILATION, POWER GENERATION, ETC. ARE THEY ALL COORDINATED OR WILL IT BE JUST EACH MANUFACTURER TO THEIR OWN STANDARD?

6 Architectural Coatings
Liquid & Powder Coatings: Architectural Culture & Market Application Method Durability (AAMA / Qualicoat) Color Resins Characteristics: Multiple vs. Single Coat Metallic Flop (Directionality) VOC Examples North America Asia Pacific Middle East Europe Architectural Market in US has a long term culture SPECIFYING liquids OR powder coatings. THESE OPTIONS ARE USUALLY AVAILABLE FOR for production of extrusions, panels and OTHER metal elements. IT’S IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THE REGIONAL AVAILABILITY OF COATINGS FOR metal products. Powder is the norm in Europe and most regions in the Western World; currently increasing availability globally. IN USA THERE ARE A LARGE NUMBER OF LIQUID COATINGS APPLICATORS with flexibility to factory color mix for rush production. BUT POWDER COATINGS ARE INCREASING BENEFITS ON SPECIFICATION PROJECTS. WE HAVE TO QUESTION IN DESIGN IF WE SHOULD BE SPECIFYING ONE METHOD OF APPLICATION VS ANOTHER, OR SHOULD WE LEAVE THE SUPPLY CHAIN OF BUILDING PRODUCTS DECIDE BASED ON COLOR AND PERFORMANCE? Liquid requires multiple coats help achieve a special flop effect; although panels need to be specially aligned for color consistency. Powder is a single coat application achieves a superior consistency in a repeatable, color matched, uniform finish without runs, drips, sags, or bubbles. Liquid requires special packaging & installation requirements due to scratching marring resistance Powder being a thermoplastic coating applied in a thick coating is inherently more mechanical and abrasion resistant, minimizing amount of touch up in the field. Both Liquid and Powder can be easily touched up or repainted in the field with similar liquid air dry coating. Important to look for approved touch up systems and consider single source for a project. Liquid Coatings Applicators require VOC cleaning technology to be VOC Compliant. Powder Coatings contain no VOCs, and overspray can be reclaimed, making them one of the most sustainable coating options. Product application efficiency is 90 to 95% if the overspray is recovered and used.

7 Architectural Coatings
Liquid & Powder Coatings: Architectural Culture & Market Application Method Durability (AAMA / Qualicoat) Color Resins Characteristics: Multiple vs. Single Coat Metallic Flop (Directionality) VOC Examples Architectural Market in US has a long term culture specifying and coating exterior extrusions with liquids and interior with powder. Most widely use for large production of large extrusions, panels and metal elements. Most of the large construction market metal products will be coated with Powder. Playgrounds, louvers, lamps, etc. Powder is the norm in Europe and most regions in the Western World; currently increasing availability globally. Innovation in color and availability is increasing the specification market. Extensive number of applicators with flexibility to factory color mix for rush production (depends on the region – limited in Europe). Powder applicators for the architectural market have to be certified by the manufacturer and a knowledgeable company will provide with an applicator list. Most likely for a project specification a product will be formulated to color, performance and durability to conform to the specification and shipped to the fabricator. Liquid and Powder coatings are available in a huge variety of colors, textures and finishes – including high gloss, matt, metallic, anodized and chrome effects. Liquid and Powder both have plenty of specifications and durability options from interior, exterior and extremely durable. Liquid requires multiple coats help achieve a special flop effect; although panels need to be specially aligned for color consistency. Powder is a single coat application achieves a superior consistency in a repeatable, color matched, uniform finish without runs, drips, sags, or bubbles. 8 Factory Application Application Video
Powder OR Liquid are applied to the substrate using similar methods Proper surface preparation, Application and Curing are required for proper performance Application Video Pre Treatment big question is Chrome or Chrome Free. They are both allowed to be used under AAMA and most manufacturer standards; the main issue is the environment. Great amount of energy is required to dispose chrome, but it offers a fool proof pretreatment to allow etching of the substrate for the ideal adhesion. Manufacturers have been innovating Chrome Free blends achieving great deal of improvement. Priming for liquid has to do mostly with the hiding of the substrate to achieve color in lower thicknesses. A beige color primer is used for some color tones and grey primer for other colors, providing a very effective coverage of the base coat. Curing by baking varies on the product specification. Certified Applicators to be audited and conform to AAMA & Manufacturer Specifications. Powder applicators for the architectural market have to be certified by the manufacturer and a knowledgeable company will provide with an applicator list. All aspects from pretreat & application Cured oven probes to ensure curing

9 Architectural Coatings
Liquid & Powder Coatings: Architectural Culture & Market Application Method Durability (AAMA / Qualicoat) Color Resins Characteristics: Multiple vs. Single Coat Metallic Flop (Directionality) VOC Examples Liquid and Powder coatings are available in a huge variety of colors, textures and finishes – including high gloss, matt, metallic, anodized and chrome effects. Liquid and Powder both have plenty of specifications and durability options from interior, exterior and extremely durable.

10 Understanding AAMA Most commonly referenced coating standards for coated fenestration products: Voluntary specifications, performance requirements and test procedures for coatings on aluminum extrusions and panels. All the factors discussed before (including color, performance, durability, application, etc) are standardized by an independent / voluntary organization. Major manufacturers of the industry (liquid, powder, etc) participate in committees to determine the appropriate testing and specifications required to achieve a common standard. In a nutshell the boards categorize coatings under 3: AAMA 2603, 2605 & 2605.

11 Measuring durability Florida natural exposure is a universal testing procedure Florida climate combines Strong UV attacks High temperatures High humidity Florida testing consists of observing color variation and gloss change in time

12 Color Selection Color Liquid & Powder Coatings:
Architectural Culture & Market Application Method Durability (AAMA / Qualicoat) Color Resins Characteristics: Multiple vs. Single Coat Metallic Flop (Directionality) VOC Examples THERE ARE 2 MAIN TOPICS COATINGS MANUFACTURERS WORK WITH TO PRODUCE DURABLE COATINGS COMPLIANT WITH AAMA. ONE OF THEM IS COLOR: FADING IS WHEN THE PIGMENT BEGINS TO BREAKDOWN. Bright, highly chromatic colors will fade quicker than more neutral shades (bright red will lose color due to UV at a quicker rate than white or gray) Check with your coatings provider for performance data and warranty coverage for these bright colors.

13 Color Selection Coatings are available in a wide selection of colors. But as durability specification increases, the range of colors reduces, so does the gloss selection. AAMA2603 – Maximum Colors Available AAMA2604 – Reduced Selection AAMA2605 – Limited to Neutral Colors Key is to achieve a good combination of resin and color selection to extend durability. Ex. White / Loss Gloss will most likely last for longest time.

14 Architectural Coatings
Liquid & Powder Coatings: Architectural Culture & Market Application Method Durability (AAMA / Qualicoat) Color Resins Characteristics: Multiple vs. Single Coat Metallic Flop (Directionality) VOC Examples THE OTHER ITEM COATINGS MANUFACTURERS WORK WITH IS THE RESIN: WHEN THE WRONG RESIN IS USED OR PIGMENTS DON’T COMPLY WITH AAMA STANDARD SELECTED OR THE YEARS FOR THE DESIGN WERE EXCEEDED RESIN AND PIGMENTS BEGIN TO BREAK. CHALKING IS WHEN THE RESIN BREAKS AND THE PIGMENT IS EXPOSED. Liquid and Powder coatings are available in a huge variety of colors, textures and finishes – including high gloss, matt, metallic, anodized and chrome effects. Liquid and Powder both have plenty of specifications and durability options from interior, exterior and extremely durable.

15 Resins used to achieve AAMA specifications
Different resin types commonly used in the metal industry: Acrylic liquid AAMA 2603 Polyester liquid AAMA 2603 Polyester powder AAMA 2603 PVDF 50% liquid AAMA 2604 Super durable polyester powder AAMA 2604 PVDF 70% liquid AAMA 2605 Fluorocarbon powder FEVE AAMA 2605 SINCE AAMA DOESN’T REQUIRE A SPECIFIC RESIN OR COLOR FOR EACH CATEGORY IT’S UP TO THE MANUFACTURERS TO INNOVATE AND CREATE RESIN BLENDS AND COLORS THAT WILL PASS TESTING.

16 Fluorocarbon Polymers Resins
PVDF Resin BRANDS FEVE Resin BRANDS MOST OF THE DESIGN COMMUNITY STILL NAMES METAL COATINGS BY BRAND NAMES. IT HAS BEEN DECADES OF EDUCATING TOWARDS A BRAND NAME, WHEN IN REALITY WE SHOULD BE EDUCATED ON DURABILITY STANDARDS. FLUOROPOLYMERS: PDVF OR FEVE CAN ACHIEVE A 10 YEARS DURABILITY ON COLOR AND GLOSS RETENTION FOR A METAL COATING; MEASURED BY AAMA STANDARDS. SHOULD WE SPECIFY ONE VS THE OTHER: WHICH ONE IS PDVF OR FEVE? DECISIONS MADE ALONG THE CONTRACT CHAIN AND DEPENDING EACH METAL PRODUCT MANUFACTURER ON WHAT THEY USE, AS LONG THEY ABIDE TO THE COLOR PERFORMANCE AND DURABILITY STANDARD.

17 FEVE in Powder Coatings
Based on Hyper Durable Technology – fluorocarbon chemistry applied to a powder coating to give the ultimate in exterior durability The carbon/fluorine bond is one of the strongest molecular bonds FEVE is a true powder coating alternative to liquid PVDF Powder Coatings A dry powder paint with no solvents or VOCs Applied by industrial coaters to aluminum Gives outstanding weather stability combined with high chemical resistance and low soiling Attractive finish available in many colors and metallic effects Meets the world’s toughest quality standards

18 Architectural Coatings
Liquid & Powder Coatings: Architectural Culture & Market Application Method Durability (AAMA / Qualicoat) Color Resins Characteristics: Multiple vs. Single Coat Metallic Flop (Directionality) VOC Examples

19 Standard Polyester Powder Superdurable Polyester Powder
Coatings Compared Standard Polyester Powder Superdurable Polyester Powder FEVE Powder PVDF Liquid Meets AAMA 2603 AAMA 2604 AAMA 2605 Coats 1 2-4 Color Range ***** **** Not very bright colors Metallic Range *** Toughness ** * Solvents VOC Up to 65% Chem. resistance Moderate Excellent Dirt Resistance Corrosion res. Low

20 Single Coat vs. Multiple Coats
Single coat (monolithic properties) Electrostatic application equipment 2.5 to 4 mils DFT High Transfer Capabilities (zero waste) Multiple coat (depth appearance) Normal application equipment 1.3 to 1.8 mils DFT Lower Efficiency (% of material utilized) Powder Liquid POWDER IN ARCHITECTURAL MARKET IS MOST COMMONLY USED AS A SINGLE COAT APPLICATION TO REACH THE COLOR OR EFFECT DESIRED. TO ACHIEVE COLOR, MULTICOLOR, METALLIC, ANODIZED, WOOD GRAIN, DISTRESSED OR ANY FINISH DESIRED THE LAB WILL BLEND DIFFERENT SLOW AND FAST CURING COMPONENTS SO THEY MELT AT DIFFERENT TIMES DURING THE STANDARD BAKE. THIS TECHNIQUE IS VERY EFFECTIVE IN ACHIEVING A VERY CONSISTENT LOOK. LIQUID IS COMMONLY APPLIED IN SEVERAL COATS TO ACHIEVE THE COLOR OR EFFECT DESIRED. FREQUENTLY A CLEAR COAT IS NECESSARY TO SEAL THE COLOR OR METALLIC FLAKE TO PROTECT AGAINST UV AND ENVIRONMENT. THIS TECHNIQUE ACHIEVES A DIFFERENT PERCEPTION TO METALLIC FINISHES AS THE METALLIC SITS ON TOP OF THE COLOR CREATING A UNIQUE FLOP EFFECT. Depth of finish Liquid requires multiple coats help achieve a special flop effect; although panels need to be specially aligned for color consistency. Powder is a single coat application achieves a superior consistency in a repeatable, color matched, uniform finish without runs, drips, sags, or bubbles.

21 Metallic Color (90° vs. Flop)
Mica / Metallic Flake Until recently, the appearance of metallic finishes in powder couldn’t reach the depth and brightness of liquid PVDF. Innovation lead to broad range of bright, metallic and matt finishes. Liquid and Powders offer different appearances: View at arm’s length, holding panels at a 90° angle, with sun shining over your shoulder (or view in D65 light booth, arm’s length, holding panels at a 90°) LIQUID METALLIC COATINGS (SPECIALLY COIL) CAN BE COMPARED AT DIFFERENT ANGLES, CALLED FLOP, AS THEY CAN ACHIEVE SOME DEEPNESS ON THE METALLIC ELEMENTS DUE TO THE MULTIPLE COATS. AS A DRAWBACK PANELS AND MODULAR PANELS SHOULD BE INSTALLED IN THE SAME DIRECTION AS THEY WERE PAINTED TO HAVE THE SAME DIRECTIONALITY. POWDER COATINGS SHOULD BE MATCHED AT 90D AS THEY HAVE AN EVEN METALLIC EFFECT, WITH NO FLOP.

22 Toughness Powder Coatings / FEVE offer outstanding toughness perfect for specifying: High abrasion areas Reduced Touch Up / Installation Powder being a thermoplastic coating applied in a thick coating is inherently more mechanical and abrasion resistant, minimizing amount of touch up in the field. Liquid requires special packaging & installation requirements due to scratching marring resistance. But other than transportation and application: Does it matter on the exterior façade of a building not exposed to constant abrasion or use if it performs the same under AAMA? Both Liquid and Powder can be easily touched up or repainted in the field with similar liquid air dry coating. Important to look for approved touch up systems and consider single source for a project.

23 AAMA Specification ASTM B117 *
AAMA 2605 – Corrosion is now tested at 2000 HR G85A5 Cyclic Corrosion THIS IS A CHEAT SHEET OF THE TESTING DIFFERENCES FOR EACH CATEGORY. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THESE ARE MINIMUM STANDARDS AND MANY CURTAIN WALL / WINDOW MANUFACTURERS HAVE ADDED TESTING AND SPECIFICATIONS TO INSURE LONG TERM PERFORMANCE. ALSO COATINGS MANUFACTURERS PROVIDE WARRANTIES LONGERTHN THESE MINIMUMS. NOTE THE DIFFERENCE ON THICKNESS REQUIREMENTS FOR LIQUIDS AND POWDERS TO PROVIDE THE SAME DURABILITY.

24 Environmental VOC Powder has no VOCs, thus it results in fewer emissions. In liquid coatings, VOCs are destroyed in most production in USA, thus eliminating 95% of emissions VOC EMISSIONS COMPARISON. IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT IN US AND MOST LOCATIONS A THERMAL OXIDIZER IS REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN A LIQUID COATING OPERATION. THERMAL OXIDIZERS, IF PROPERLY CONNECTED, WILL MINIMIZE ENERGY CONSUMPTION DURIGN THE CURING BY SUPPORTING THE OVEN.

25 Environmental EPD What is an EPD?
Independently verified and registered certified Eco Footprint document. Transparent and comparable information about the life-cycle environmental impact of products It can help towards LEED points Results: It analyses upstream (raw materials) and downstream (application).

26 Corrosion Specification: Aluminium
Category Corrosivity Examples (outdoor) C1 Very low Dry or cold zone, atmospheric environment with very low pollution and time of wetness, e.g. certain deserts, Central Arctic/Antarctica C2 Low Temperate zone, atmospheric environment with low pollution (SO2: <5 μg/m3) e.g. rural areas. Dry or cold zone with short time of wetness C3 Medium Temperate zone, atmospheric environment with medium pollution (SO2: 5 μg/m3 to 30 μg/m3) or some effect of chlorides, e.g. urban areas, coastal areas with low deposition of chlorides Subtropical and tropical zone, atmosphere with low pollution C4 High Temperate zone, atmospheric environment with high pollution (SO2: 30 μg/m3 to 90 μg/m3) or substantial effect of chlorides, e.g. polluted urban areas, industrial areas, coastal areas without spray of salt water or, exposure to strong effect of de-icing salts Subtropical and tropical zone, atmosphere with medium pollution *C5 Very high Temperate and subtropical zone, atmospheric environment with very high pollution (SO2: 90 μg/m3 to 250 μg/m3) and/or significant effect of chlorides, e.g. industrial areas, coastal areas, sheltered positions on coastline *CX Extreme Subtropical and tropical zone (very high time of wetness), atmospheric environment with very high pollution (SO2: higher than 250 μg/m3) including accompanying and production factors and/or strong effect of chlorides, e.g. extreme industrial areas, coastal and offshore areas, occasional contact with salt spray ENVIRONMENT IS HOW THE SALTS AND CONTAMINATION AFFECT THE CORROSION OF THE METAL. ALTHOUGH THE COATING PROTECTS AGAINST ENVIRONMENT, NORMALLY THE EDGES ARE NOT PROTECTED (UNLESS SPECIFIED) AND CORROSION WILL LIFT THE COATING. WE CAN PREVENT THIS BY DETERMINING HIGH CORROSION ENVIRONMENTS AND SPECIFIED CORRECT COATINGS, SURFACE PREPARATION AND MAINTENANCE TO AVOID THIS SITUATION. IT’S IMPORTANT THIS PROCESS IS COVERED BY SPECIFICATIONS, QUOTED AND SIGNED IN WARRANTY TO BE EFFECTIVE THESE DECISION SHOULD BE DONE AT A DESIGN LEVEL AS THEY GREATLY AFFECT PROJECT BUDGET.

28 AAMA 2603 / Qualicoat class I
Mostly used for interior applications Also used in exterior areas with limited exposure to UV 1 year Florida color retention (per AAMA) Many color options available for powder and liquid coatings. Torre el Faro, Argentina AAMA 2603 IS CONSIDRED THE BASE SPECIFICATION; USUALLY FOR INTERIOR OR LOW UV / SALT EXPOSURE. FOR DECADES IT WAS USED FOR BULDING EXTERIOR IN NORTHERN OR SOUTHERN AREAS OF THE EQUATOR. MANY WINDOW MANUFACTURERS STILL USE THIS STANDARD FOR SINGLE FAMILY HOMES WITH NO UV EXPOSURE OR INTERIORS. AAMA 2603 OFFERS A WIDE RANGE OF COLORS, TEXTURES AND METALLIC OPTIONS AS THE ALLOWANCE FOR COLOR CHANGE IS VERY FORGIVING AND NO GLOSS RETENTION IS REQUIRED. IN POWDERS YOU CAN SPECIFY METALLIC FINISHES SUCH AS CHROME.
