Our Project is Hola Mexico
Year 6 – Summer 2 Our project will cover many areas. Did you know Mexico has the smallest Volcano? Actually its not even a volcano, it’s a geyser. It is 13m high and has a staircase inside. The Maya worshipped nature gods, especially the gods of Sun, Rain and Corn. The Maya children were named depending on what day they were born, Every day of the year had a special name for both boys and girls. There are more than 50 species of hummingbird found in Mexico. The Mexican flag consists of three colours: green, white and red. They represent Hope & victory, purity and blood. Mexico City is actually built on a lake and is sinking 20cm each year. Hot chocolate was know as ‘the drink of the gods’ to the Maya people. Mexico is home to a very rare Volcano Rabbit, guess where it lives! Maths In Maths we will be consolidating our understanding of the four operations and fractions, decimals and percentages by applying our skills to real life situations like the summer fair. English In English, we will be writing a range of pieces to celebrate the children’s learning by gathering inspiration from a range of sources. RE We are going to be discussing different religious ideas and concepts. Music Mrs Kimber is back with year 6 this half term to develop our musical skills and practice for our leavers assembly. PHSE We will be exploring puberty and discussing transition to high school. P.E We will be taking part in athletics and rounders. Science We will be learning about light and how it travels, exploring how shadows are made.. Computing We will be reflecting on our learning and combining our skills with topic.

Reading Spelling Maths
Basic Skills Practice: Year 6 Please look at the list below and select one activity that your child would like to do at home (if your child has not already done one). Please note that final submission for this home learning project is Monday 15th July, where all children will be given the opportunity to share their learning. If you would like to bring your learning in earlier, please do so. Find out about Mexican flowers, trees and animals. Some are very different to those found in the UK! Record what you learn in a notebook or picture chart. Find out more about Maya hieroglyphs and symbols. Can you write your name or a short message to a friend? In Mexico, the most common spoken language is Spanish. Can you find out how to say some phrases in Spanish? Do you know anyone who speaks Spanish? Go to the supermarket and see if you can find out about any food that is imported from Mexico – try fruit or vegetables. Plan an imaginary trip or holiday to Mexico. Look at holiday brochures or research online. How many ways are there to get there? How long would it take? How much would it cost? Make an itinerary for your trip, showing what you would like to see and do while you are there. Design and build a Maya temple using junk materials, such as cardboard boxes, newspaper and card. Reading Your child has been given a book from the library which is based on their reading age. Each week they will be given the opportunity to change their book at least once in the library and they can always ask to change it more frequently if needed. Please record when your child reads at home whether this is their school reading book or another book or their choice. Readers of all abilities need to read aloud to an adult four times a day. Spelling Please see the attached sheet for each half term’s spellings. There are 20 words that follow the Year 6 spelling rules, 10 words from the Year 5/6 spelling list and 10 words that we will be using during our topic. Please practise the spellings with your child at home; we will check their spellings in school. To help us work together on developing your child’s spelling, please tick the boxes next to each word to show whether your child can spell the word at home. Maths expectations We are focusing on developing number and times tables with our home learning as these skills are the basics for mathematical understanding. You will receive a list of activities to support with learning. Through the Accelerated Home Connect children can practice multiplication activities. We have also launched Times tables Rock stars. Children have all been given a log in to practice at home.
