The Response for Atonement: Romans 6
2
If atonement means that all sin for all time has been accounted for in Christ’s sacrifice then it follows for many in logical way that we can do what we want.
3
Paul appeals not to the death of sin on the cross to support his coming teaching, but rather the death of the life in sin which declared them free.
4
Many in this young church were hearing two extremes in their discipleship 1) that the Christian life was one without standards of living or 2) that after appealing to Jesus for atonement they should refer to Moses to learn about holiness.
5
Paul reminds his readers not of legal obligations, as if they were sworn into a club, but rather to their identities.
6
If you are dead to a former life and its standards, it follows that you are alive to a new one and new ones. If you were enslaved to a master, you were subject to his will entirely, but if a new master acquired you, the old holds no authority- rather the new master must now be obeyed.
7
Neither the dead nor the enslaved have rights
Neither the dead nor the enslaved have rights. Every thought, intent, and action are now meant to filter through the life of Christ who gives us not a way of legal rightness, but true holiness in faith.
