2. Magna Carta (Great Charter) 1215

3. Struggle For Power Kings vs. Popes (Again)
Kings and popes argue over who has more power
King Philip IV of France vs. Pope Boniface VIII
King Philip kidnaps the pope!
Ends with popes unable to force monarchs to obey them (kings have more power)

4. The Great Schism
1305 – Pope Clement V moves from Rome to Avignon, France weakening the Church
1378 – Pope Urban VI is chosen as the new pope
He’s an Italian reformer & moves back to Rome
French cardinals are upset and respond by selecting a French pope – Clement VII = 2 popes!
Why is this bad?
Continuous excommunication led to the RCC’s Great Schism
Why would it be a problem to have 2 popes? How does that show a weakening in the church?

6. 3rd pope appointed & then all three forced to resign
1417 Martin V is chosen as new pope ending the Great Schism

John Wycliffe & Jan Hus (professors) begin preaching that Jesus and the Bible are the true leaders of the Church – not the pope
Upset by the wealth of the church too

Bubonic plague weakened the people’s faith in the Church as they began looking for answers in other places

10. The Hundred Years War
England and France fought over control of the French throne
Victory goes back and forth
French ultimately win

13. Use of the longbow by the English severely weakened the French & code of chivalry (WHY??)
Joan of Arc led French into victory and was burned at the stake by the Church as a heretic (said she heard voices from God)

14. The war increased both countries’ sense of nationalism and reliance on their kings
Both France and England grow stronger
With religious devotion being questioned and chivalry dead, many considered this an end to the Middle Ages
