3 -er verbs and conjugation

4 Two words to know: Infinitive= basic form of the verb, unconjugated, has the word “to” in front Ex. “to play” “to watch” Conjugation= changing the verb to agree with a subject Otherwise, you would be saying things like “I to like math class” “We to have lunch” “They to do not homework”

5 ER Verbs…One small step for man…one giant leap for French students!

6 Verb Groups There are 3 groups of regular verbs in French, ones that end in –er, -ir, and –re. -er verbs are the biggest group! Examples include: écouter- to listen to, étudier- to study, envoyer- to send, regarder- to watch, to look at, dessiner- to draw, chanter- to sing, aimer- to like, to love, manger- to eat, travailler- to work, préférer- to prefer, voyager- to travel, habiter- to live (in a place), jouer- to play, parler- to talk, to speak, détester- to hate, trouver-to find, chercher- to look for, penser-to think, danser- to dance

7

8 Conjugating regular er verbs
First, take the infinitive, drop the –er from the end to get the stem. Ex. Aimer → aimer → aim (stem) Make sure your pronoun chart is set up correctly Then, add the following endings to each subject: e, es, e, ons, ez, ent Ex. Aimer J’aime nous aimons Tu aimes vous aimez Il, elle, on aime ils, elles aiment

9 Once again, those endings are:
-E -Ons -Es -Ez -E -Ent

10 Pronunciation- All the verbs in the box ( or “shoe”) sound the same!
Ex. Aimer J’aime nous aimons Tu aimes vous aimez Il, elle, on aime ils, elles aiment Also, each statement can be translated into 3 forms in English (simple, progressive, emphatic) So… j’aime= I like, I’m liking, I do like Nous aimons= We like, We’re liking, We do like Negation: To make a verb negative, to say you don’t do something, put “ne…pas” around the verb Ex. Je n’aime pas Nous ne regardons pas Il ne parle pas

11 Practice: Translate from French to English
Je regarde- Tu manges- Il parle- Elle habite- On écoute- Nous aimons- Vous travaillez- Ils dessinent- Elles préfèrent-

12 Practice: Answers Je regarde- I watch, I look at Tu manges- You eat

13 Practice: Translate the following
We dance- He thinks- I watch- They (f) talk- You (sing) look at- You (plural) like- She watches- One lives-

14 Practice: Answers We dance- Nous dansons He thinks- Il pense
I watch- Je regarde They (f) talk- Elles parlent You (sing) look for- Tu cherches You (plural) like- Vous aimez She works- Elle travaille One lives- On habite They (f) travel- Elles voyagent

15 Les Phrases- Sentences
Like in English, French sentences basic structure is usually subject + verb + object If you have more than one verb, you conjugate the one closest to the subject (if it should still have “to” in front in English, leave it in the infinitive). Practice Sentences- Traduisez! Le chat regarde l’ oiseau. Ils regardent la télé. Vous jouez au base-ball. Nous aimons danser. Elles aiment parler.

16 Irregular verbs The verbs lire= to read and dormir= to sleep are irregular (like avoir=to have) You know avoir is conjugated: J’ai nous avons Tu as vous avez Il a ils ont Don’t worry about conjugating lire and dormir for now, just know the meaning

17 Lire Dormir
