2 Pivot tables allow you to focus on what you want to see
This view only appears when a cell in the table is selected This is the set of fields you can choose from Figures from table to explore the NHS workforce Cluster & Benchmark groups have been dragged into the rows If we un tick them in the Field List….

4 We will cut down to just staff group and then select the Nurse & Health Visitor group within the staff groups

All the fields except Staff Group have been removed from the rows and columns

6 Click this arrow to show the drop down
Click OK and we have the FTE number of Nurses & Health Visitors in Trusts & CCGs in England in September 2017 Having de-selected all the values click on those you want – in this case Nurses & Health Visitors Click Select all to select or de-select all the values

7 How many nurses are there in London?
Use the drop down arrow in the HEE Region Name filter box Tick Select Multiple Items Use the bottom corner to pull the box big enough to see more values Click All once to de-select all Regions and then tick the ones you want to see There are 50,808 Nurses & Health Visitors in regions with London in their names in September 2017

8 Go back into the HEE Region drop down and select all regions
How do we see the Nurses & Health Visitors in each region? Go back into the HEE Region drop down and select all regions

Drag the HEE Region Name into the Column Labels box Figures from table to explore the NHS workforce

10 Now we have Nurses & Health Visitors by Region, but it is hard to read

Lets look at Accident and Emergency nurses each September for the last few years for each region Select the secondary area of work field and drag it into the Report Filter, then select Accident & Emergency Figures from table to explore the NHS workforce

Now drag the Date field from the Report Filter into the Column Labels and select each September only Figures from table to explore the NHS workforce

15 This gives us a time series of A&E nurse numbers – although the Grand Total column is not much use. This can be removed

16 This is a very brief overview of a complex but powerful tool looking at a complex table.
