1 Defining a Successful and Sustainable AWOP
Workshop AWOP National Meeting Cincinnati, Ohio August 2019

2 Characteristics and Attributes of Top AWOPs
Think of an AWOP that you are impressed with (i.e., they get things done, they are having an impact on drinking water quality in their state). Think of the personnel that belong to this AWOP. Think of the environment they have created. Think of how they implement their AWOP. Identify the characteristics and attributes of this AWOP and the associated personnel.

3 Workshop Work with your table group and answer this question.
“What are the characteristics and attributes of a successful and sustainable AWOP?” Document your responses in the workshop handout provided. Workshop Facilitator’s Role -List responses on flip chart by going around the room and soliciting one response at a time from each group. -With audience help divide the responses into leadership, technical, or both categories -Help participants conclude that they must develop leadership skills as well as technical skills The trainer should ask the participants to identify each characteristic as being either ‘technical’ or ‘leadership’. Suggestions of characteristics being ‘both’ should be discouraged. Count the number of technical and leadership characteristics. The outcome will typically be heavily weighted toward leadership. Make the point that PBT includes both technical and leadership skills training. It takes both to make a long-term impact on plants and their staff. Leadership skills can be thought of as “soft” skills From Wikipedia Soft skills are a combination of interpersonal people skills, social skills, communication skills, character traits, attitudes, career attributes[1] and EQ (emotional intelligence quotient) amongst others. The Collins English Dictionary defines the term "soft skills" as “desirable qualities for certain forms of employment that do not depend on acquired knowledge: they include common sense, the ability to deal with people, and a positive flexible attitude. From Wiktionary Definition of “Hard Skill”:  A technical Skill, not one that is interpersonal. The technical skills would be acquired knowledge.
