1 Welcome Let’s talk about Key stage 1!

2 Phonics Letters and Sounds
Phonic teaching has continued where EYFS has stopped, we revisit the EYFs curriculum all the time and revise what we already know. We are now looking at spelling patterns linked to sounds. E.G the different ways of using the s/se/st/ss sound. For example House listen hiss sun The children are now becoming more fluent readers, focusing on ‘story telling’ using expression. We are still encouraging the children to sound out (decode) words, particularly in phonics. Encourage the children to use sound buttons to decode words. E.G sh o ck i ng

3 Phase 4 focuses on groups of words and how to use the sounds to write and read longer words.
For example, think – th i n k split- s p l i t jumping- j u m p i n g Shrine sh r i n e

4 Terminology Pure Sounds- the sound said in its purest form.
Phoneme-A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in a word. (m.a.t) Graphemes- a symbol of a phoneme. A letter or symbol of letters to represent a sound.(Phoneme, diagraph or trigraph etc). Segmenting- When a word is pulled apart to see or say the smallest unit of sounds. ( d.o.g sh.i.p) Blending – When all the sounds in a word are read together to make the whole word. (dog. Ship.) Diagraph- A group of two letters making one sound (ee). Trigraph- A group of three letters making one sounds (igh).

5 Year 1 Phonic Screening Check
The check is a short, light-touch assessment to confirm whether individual children have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard. The checks consist of 40 words and non-words that your child will be asked to read with their teacher. The current pass mark is 32 out of 40. If your child is not successful in this, support will be given by the school to improve their reading skills. They will then retake the check the following year so schools can track children until they are able to decode. The check will be delivered on the week commencing Monday 10th June 2019.

6 How can I help at home: Please refer to the booklet. Lots of practice.

7 Reading Please work with your child on reading, spellings and keywords every day. The children will be encouraged to change their own books. Please make sure your child’s reading record and book is in school with them everyday. It is helpful if you record in the reading record when your child has read at home so we are able to see progression. Spelling check’s will take place each Friday and new spelling’s will be given.

8 Cursive, cursive cursive!
Handwriting Cursive, cursive cursive! The children need to practise writing in cursive style. This will help with the orientation of their letters. If your child is finding it hard to join the letters up they should begin by writing the letters in isolation (in the cursive style) and then join them up at a later date. When they have demonstrated that they are working hard to join up their letters they will graduate to a snazzy pencil and a certificate!

9 Spelling Time Each child will have 5 or 6 words to write each week. (Given on a Friday and checked on a Friday). We will be keeping track of what they are able to do and if needed they will revisit. Please, please, please spend some time reading and writing with your child at home, this helps to consolidate learning taking place at school and is so valuable. It’s really important that the children can write the key words in their everyday writing not just spell them for a test!
