1 Harmful social and environmental effects

2 Social and environmental justice…
Both social and environmental justice mean stopping people who are disadvantaged (or who have fewer choices) from being exploited. To put something right means toredressa situation. Example: the Apartheid legacy is the reason why most of our country’s communities are poor and exploited. “recognise the injustices of the past, …heal the divisions of the past and establish a society based on democratic values, social justice and fundamental human rights…”(Africa.comBlog) Sport Quotas? Black Economic Empowerment?

3 …. Social injustice:… poverty stricken communities suffer from discrimination and lack of basic services. Poverty:…leads to a lack of freedom; without freedom you don’t have any choices. Poverty is an injustice – to stop poverty is justice, but to overcome poverty is a basic human right. Environmental injustice:…those with fewer choices suffer most from pollution, dangerous work and not having health resources.

4 Social justice… The South African National Planning Commission (NPC) highlighted the key challenges facing South Africa as follows: Too few South Africans in work. The quality of school education for most black people is sub standard. Inadequateinfrastructure limits social inclusion and faster economic growth. Spatial challenges continue to marginalise the poor. South Africa’s growth path is highly resource-intensive and hence unsustainable. The ailing public health system confronts a massive disease burden. The performance of the public service is uneven. Corruption undermines state legitimacy and service delivery. South Africa remains a divided society.

5 A little more about environmental justice…
The resources needed for development comes from the environment. If the environment is destroyed, the possibility of development is also destroyed. But development is about who controls resources. Poor people suffer the most from environmental degradation and benefit least from the wealth produced In the cities, polluting industries and waste dumps are frequently located in areas where poor people live.

8 Crime and violence… …are violations of our Constitution and the Bill of Rights which state clearly that everyone has the right to feel safe and live in a safe environment. Is this right fully being carried out in our country? Think about some areas in the city – if our right to safety is so important why would you not walk around by yourself or drive through some parts? Who has to ensure our safety ?
