Injuries Team Building Team Commitment Development in Team Help Others Conform Value for Each Other Team Goals Personal Commitment Self-Managing Self-Discipline Self-Responsibility Personal Goals Care for Self Discipline/fear Rules Supervisory Control Since our approach to eradicate accidents and incidents was reactionary, an independent comprehensive assessment of the organization’s safety culture was done by Du Pont Sustainable Solutions against best practice safety management standards and to develop a set of improvement recommendations. “I do it so I don’t get caught” “I do it so none of us gets hurt” “I do it so I don’t get hurt” Dependent culture Independent culture Interdependent culture Time Safety Culture 4

DuPont’s view of Much Asphalt There are some indications of an independent culture at Much Asphalt and even early signs of a tendency towards inter -dependence as seen in an emerging team approach to safety responsibility that is developing at certain sites. However there is also a strong reliance on punitive measures to enforce operating discipline which is often necessary but has the potential of keeping the culture at the dependent level if the organisation does not find a more mature approach to progressive motivation.
