Activator – Happy Friday the 13th
What is inertia? What is mass? Would you rather try to stop a ping pong ball thrown at you or a bowling ball thrown at you?
2
Newton’s First Law October 13, 2017
3
Objective SWBAT: explain a real-world situation that demonstrates Newton’s first law related to an unbalanced force
4
Connection We talked about some important vocabulary yesterday. Today we are going to use and apply some of those terms as we discuss Newton’s first law, the law of inertia. We will also start class by talking about Sir Isaac Newton who developed these three laws of motion.
5
Sir Isaac Newton Isaac Newton was a mathematician, physicist, astronomer, and natural philosopher who was born during the 17th century and became known as one of the most influential scientists to ever live. He is credited with creating what we now know as Newton’s three laws of motion which we will be talking about today. He is also credited with helping to describe gravity for the first time, explaining the oceans’ tides, coming up with the first calculation for the speed of sound, and building the first reflecting telescope.
6
Newton’s First Law This is sometimes called the Law of Inertia - remember that inertia is an objects resistance to change its state of motion Newton’s First Law says that an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force This also means that an object in motion will stay in motion unless it is acted upon by an unbalanced force
7
Newton’s First Law The more mass that an object has, the more inertia it has. Therefore, if an object has a lot of mass (inertia), it will take a large unbalanced force to change its state of motion

Real World Examples There are many real-world example of Newton’s First Law, and I want you to choose 2 to write down: You are driving fast and go around a turn, and your body slides across the seat The car quickly stops and you are thrown forward (this is why we have seatbelts!) When a car accelerates quickly, and you are pushed back into the seat You are riding a bike and hit the curb, and you flip over the handle bars A bowling ball is rolled down the hallway, it will only stop when it hits a wall
10
Story Time Write a short story in which the main character (it can be you) does some kind of activity that has to do with the law of inertia. Your story should be a full paragraph (at least 5 sentences) for full credit and should show that you understand and can apply Newton’s first law to a real world situation. “Once upon a time, Little Johnny was walking down the street when suddenly….” After everyone has completed their stories, I would like to have some volunteers read their stories (or allow me to read them to the class)
