3.0-T Functional MRI Safety and Artifacts during Deep Brain Stimulation: Experience in 102 Patients
The average electrode contact artifact diameter was 9.3 mm, while 1.9% of the brain was obscured by the coil artifact. While the coil artifact is larger at higher magnetic field strength (2.1% of intracranial volume at 3.0 T vs 1.4% at 1.5 T [P < .001]), it is limited to the superficial frontoparietal cortex and structures neighboring the electrode contacts, rendering the majority of the brain visible and fit for analyses such as functional MRI.
