1960 Election Both JFK and Nixon had similar positions on policy issues, but two factors helped JFK immensely: 1. Television 2. Civil Rights JFK won by .17% of popular vote 303 to 219 in electoral college First election that included all 50 states

JFK and Civil Rights MLK jr and 33 others were arrested at a segregated lunch counter in Atlanta Others were released but MLK was sentenced to months of hard labor for a “traffic violation” Eisenhower administration refused to intervene and Nixon took no public position JFK called MLKs wife and RFK persuaded the judge to let him go.
