So You Want to Learn the Bible?
Part 4 How to READ Your Bible It I blessed ot be able to look at other lessons on the internet or in books. It is no excuse for personal work, but can benefit everyone. At the same time when I use someone elses lesson thoughts I am careful not to mention their name, as there is often a bias for using their material (for or against them). Consider that this is why a preacher must be personally known for their works (titus 2-3) This sermon is taken from notes by Berry Kercheville

Learning How to Read Matthew 2 How many wise men came? What day did this happen? POINT: Few know how to critically read!
7
Critical Reading and the Bible
“I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says: 'Hearing you will hear and shall not understand, And seeing you will see and not perceive; For the hearts of this people have grown dull. ……Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.‘” Matthew 13:13-15 2Ti 3:5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! 6 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, 7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith; 9 but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, as theirs also was.

Four “R”s of Bible Reading
Reflect Record Respond Active cognitive reading
9
1. READ the Bible Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine Timothy 4:13 1Ti 4:13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
10
1. READ the Bible Active vs. passive reding - Try reading ALOUD EXAMPLE: Psalm 119: Read carefully Use a pencil or pen - Repeat Daily bible reading tends to be more passive that active. It is useful but active reading is more involved and more substantive
11
2. REFLECT on Reading Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? -- unless indeed you are disqualified Corinthians 13:5 1Ti 4:13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
12
2. REFLECT on Reading Reflect purposefully - Reflect visually Revelation 7:13-17; Luke 13: Reflect prayerfully Before and after reading - Reflect patiently
13
3. RECORD Your Reading "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates” Deuteronomy 6:6-9
14
3. RECORD Your Reading Recording is an aid for memorization - Record with organization - Record questions - Record applications Committing scripture to memory is a long term goal for all bible students
15
4. RESPOND to Your Reading
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves….. he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does James 1:22, 14 1Ti 4:13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
16
4. RESPOND to Your Reading
Don’t be a reader only - Respond with confession - Respond with obedience - Respond with the words in our heart Deuteronomy 6:4-9 1Ti 4:13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
