3 Aesthetics The colouring and size of the album name communicates the importance of the information presented, it also fits with the coherent colour scheme. In addition, the artists name s significantly larger than the album name, this could be because the album was the artist’s debut and would therefore not have a reputation yet, and may want to boost her stage name over the name of the album. To allow for a clean looking poster, they have spared space by putting a link to a website on it. This means any less important information can be put on the website and not squeezed into the poster, for example if people wanted information on prices or merchandise then they could look on the website. In the bottom right hand corner there is a credit for the record companies, as this could work as a promotional tool for them, because the artist is essentially their product and portfolio. The layout of the poster is very symmetrical with both the typography and the image of the artist, this adds to the clean and polished look of the poster. This is supported by the web address which makes space by not needing to show extra information. The clean look is to appeal to a target audience that would be drawn to the professional looking photo and black and white contrast.

4 Advertisement The poster also names the artist’s ’big hit’ leading up to the album being released, this is a device that is used to bring in more sales, as the single should be recognisable to more possible buyers and will present the mood of the album. Making those who like the single more likely to buy the whole album, rather than just the single. It is also beneficial as some people might know one of the big hits listed but not who its by, therefore making a poster, advertising the artist, more relevant to them. The image used for the music magazine advert is the same image that is used in album cover, this is to create a synergy between the two and would also make merchandising easier, as if they incorporate the same image then viewers will draw a link between the three. This is a very useful devise if you want to merchandise the album and will further boost the artist who may not be that well known as it is a debut album.

5 Conclusion This music magazine album advert has many conventions that it uses strongly, the ability to merchandise is a particular one that is shared by the analysis of Kasabian’s poster, this could be because both albums were the artists debut album and therefore they may not be that well know. This would give the artists a motive to merchandise to get their image better know and creating a synergy between the album and merchandise is an effective way of doing this. In addition, the colour scheme was deliberately selected to appeal to a target audience. Young people may be more drawn to a modern looking style and so the album presents the artists image as modern and neat, aiming at getting the audience to recognise this artist has ‘a modern and stylish look’. Overall I think that this poster shares several similarities with Kasabian’s poster and that a definite strong point to both is using a website to promote further information and using the artists better known songs to draw the attention of a wider audience that might know the songs but not know the artist. When designing my poster I will look for a way of incorporating these two devices.
