Before the Great Depression
Herbert Hoover Became President in 1929 Stock Market crashed Many Americans began to get loans from banks in order to buy more stocks As stock prices went up, investors would resell them to make a large profit

Black Tuesday October 29th, 1929 Stock prices fell dramatically.
Banks ran out of money, including people’s savings accounts. Factories began shutting down.

Hoover’s Response Hoover believed that businesses could fix the Great Depression, and that it would not last very long Did not want the Federal government to get involved. relied on state and local governments, churches charities and individuals to provide relief.

Oil and Cotton in Texas Oil:
New oil discovery led to an increase in supply in oil, and a decrease in price. Texas Railroad Commission tried to limit the production Companies began to sell “Hot oil” Illegally produced oil Cotton: Price of cotton also fell due to high supply.

Dust Bowl During World War I many farmers in Texas planted a great amount of Wheat. The wheat farming dried the land. Strong Windstorms would pick up the dirt and formed huge dust storms. Lung problems Mostly occurred in West Texas. 1/3 of Farmers in the Panhandle left the area.

Life in Texas during the 1930s
More than 200,000 Mexican Americans moved to Mexico during this time. 2 reasons for leaving Could not find job Could not prove they were a citizen. African American unemployment went up 2 times higher than Anglos Left Texas to try and find work in the cities.

Sharecroppers and Tenant farmers did not seek help Believed things were not much worse for them. Businesses and Merchants offered credit and built gardens so people could buy food

Hoover vs. Roosevelt Roosevelt promised to make the Government more active in helping end the great depression Roosevelt won by a lot

Texas Helps Roosevelt John Nance Garner (Cactus Jack) ran as his Vice president Sam Rayburn (Congressman) helped get a law passed to prevent another stock market collapse.

Roosevelt Launches the New Deal
New Deal: A series of domestic programs aimed to fix problems brought on by the Great Depression

Alphabet Agencies A government agency formed during the New deal that was known by the first initials of its name.

Federal Emergency Relief administration (FERA)
Gave money to state and local agencies to distribute directly to unemployed people.

Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
Hired young men to work on public projects that would preserve natural resources and improve public life.

National Youth Administration (NYA)
Hired young high school and college students to perform office and maintenance jobs.

Public Works Administration (PWA)/Works Progress Administration (WPA)
Funded major construction projects that created jobs for the unemployed

WPA PWA These projects built bridges, dams, swimming pools, recreation centers, stadiums, parks and schools. Built more than 13 schools in Fort Worth alone

Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA)
Tried to reduce the supply of basic crops and farm products including Wheat, Corn, Cotton, Rice, dairy products and pork.
