2 There are two parts to Maths in the early years: Number Shape, space and measure. We teach these through playing and exploring, active learning and creating & thinking critically.

3 Number At Grafton we provide children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems. We do this via hands on interactive activities through play and adult led teaching.

4 Number Count to 20 Say 1 more/1 less Addition Subtraction
At the end of Reception your child will be expected to do the following : Count to 20 Say 1 more/1 less Addition Subtraction Problem solving Reasoning Doubling, halving, sharing.

5 Shape, Space and Measure
Child-initiated activities and adult led teaching help children develop their understanding of shape, space and measure. We embed Maths in our every day.

6 Shape Space and Measure
At the end of Reception your child will be expected to do the following : Use everyday language related to size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money. Recognise, describe and create patterns. Explore everyday objects and shapes, using mathematical language to describe.

7 Shape Space Measure Look around the room – how many 2D flat shapes can you see? Share ideas with a talk partner.

8 Activities Activity: Match the Numicon to the numeral. Can you make a bigger number than 10? Find the coins in the sand. Can you add together? How much money do you have in total? What can you buy? Can you make a container to send the animal back to the zoo? Can you make a pattern?

9 Everyday Maths at home Rhymes, reading phone numbers aloud, cost of shopping items, repeating totals, counting aloud, sharing the date, water play (volume/capacity), outdoor walks – door numbers, leaf shapes, counting steps, subtracting train stops, finding 2D/3D shapes in the home and environment. You can link Maths with absolutely everything, just remember to share it!
