Brought together grassroots protests within a larger framework of resistance

SCLC promoted a protest march but the media did not respond.
First protest was determined to be a failure
Publicizing protest actions became a priority for the organization

Protests turn ugly as “Bull” Conner, the Police Chief brought out the fire hoses, dogs, and batons

Dr. King was jailed
