3
Setting the Research context at Rhodes University
Rhodes University Research Philosophy Develop and maintain RU culture of research Increase the number of Postgraduates and research outputs Increase regional research focus and collaboration Build on international links Increase sources of internal and external funding opportunities Foster research in identified niche areas
4
Setting the Research context at Rhodes University
“The importance of the Library to scholarly output” Innovative solutions are required: The Institutional Repository Interdisciplinary scholarship Research capacity building Developing institutional research niches Effective monitoring and benchmarking Citation analysis and comparisons

Setting the Research context at Rhodes University
Rhodes Library’s Strategic Plan ( ) Identified strategic focus areas eStrategy is one New posts created Librarian: Institutional Repository & Metadata Librarian: Scholarly Communication Started 1st June 2016
6
Scholarly Communication
Defined as “the system through which research and other scholarly writings are created, evaluated for quality, disseminated to the scholarly community, and preserved for future use. The system includes both formal means of communication, such as publication in peer-reviewed journals, and informal channels” (Association of College & Research Libraries)

Scholarly Communication at RUL
Liaison and Communication with Faculty (60%) Advocacy and support for scholarly publishing and non-peer-reviewed research dissemination Awareness of trends in scholarly communications Providing support for researchers and postgraduates Providing support for Intellectual Property rights and Copyright Advocacy of policies Strategic input and contributions for researchers and postgraduates

Scholarly Communication at RU: Institutional Repository
eResearch: Focus Area: Institutional Repository Goal: To build and sustain the collection of institutional research on the IR (driven by Head: Technical Services and Head: User and Research Services) Broad aspect: IR Mandate/Policy Current status: ContentPro was finally deemed unsuitable for flexible and manageable navigation – hindered the IR project. Migration to VITAL – workflow and navigation is greatly improved VALET is a critical tool to advance the workflow (SC, Faculty Librarians and Researchers)

Scholarly Communication at RUL: Institutional Repository
“Institutional repositories are digital collections of the outputs created within a university or research institution” ( Theses and Dissertations Peer-reviewed research articles Non-peer reviewed items eg conference papers, posters, inaugural lectures, keynote speeches etc Rhodes Digital Commons

Scholarly Communication at RUL: Open Access
“Open-access (OA) literature is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. OA removes price barriers (subscriptions, licensing fees, pay-per-view fees) and permission barriers (most copyright and licensing restrictions)” (Peter Suber)
20
Scholarly Communication at RUL: OA complements traditional endeavours
“Combining the use of print research with collaborative capabilities of Web 2.0 technologies as a means to developing new research and scholarship” “An emergent form of scholarship that emphasizes the importance of collaboration and mentoring in the scholarly process”

eResearch: Focus Area: Research Analysis Goal: Investigation of research analysis tools. Broad aspect: Metrics ie Incites, Altmetrics, Google Citations, Dimensions, Microsoft Academics. Current status: To investigate suitable institutional culture using research analysis tools. Comparative analysis when required by researchers: Encompasses comparisons between peer-researchers, national institutions, international similar-size institutions, subject areas globally To establish current partnerships and future research areas

Scholarly Communication at RUL: Open Access Publishing: Gold Route (OA Journals)
OA Journals make their research content: immediately available to the public free of charge in line with OA requirements at the time of their initial publication

“ORCID’s vision is a world where all who participate in research, scholarship, and innovation are uniquely identified and connected to their contributions across disciplines, borders, and time.”

Why IDENTIFIERS Matter (Matt Buys ORCiD)
Persistent IDs (Matt Buys – “Pretty damn stubborn”) Document impact through research frameworks AND reduce the workload Researcher is in control Importance to researchers, publishers, funders and organisations Name ambiguity Trusted metadata Unifies silo systems (HR, Finance, RIMS, Repository) Showcases Return-on-Investment Discoverability

SOUTH AFRICA “Academic libraries, especially those in Africa, have limited access to critical research information” “This means that Africa is in fact deprived of its own knowledge production, relegating the continent to the status of silent and invisible contributor to research output.” “ The adoption of open-access principles, which can help to remove these financial barriers to access to information, is one of the most progressive ways of growing and showcasing African research.” Mr Derek Hanekom. Minister of Science and Technology, SA Government, South Africa (2012)
