Estimations The DIFFERENT APPROACHES TOP-DOWN BOTTOM-UP
“HOW LONG IS THAT GOING TO TAKE?” TOP-DOWN BOTTOM-UP What is the goal or deliverable we want to have? Break down into work packages. Refine work packages and assign them out. Pros: Get started quickly. Identify major items quickly. Cons: Details might be missed. (Including key details.) What are the tasks needed to accomplish everything? Organize the tasks into specific groups/work packages. Estimate the tasks individually, then rollup into a summary. Pros: Detailed schedule, more details, builds teamwork. Cons: Takes longer, requires everybody. At Exsilio, we’ve standardized on a bottom-up approach to ensure accuracy, as well as team ownership of the estimates & deliverables. 6
