Outline of Presentation
STATE OF DIGITAL DATA DATA ECOSYSTEM ACTIONABLE ANALYTICS FROM BIG DATA BIG DATA MATURITY MODEL - ROADMAP TO DATA INTEGRATION NIMC’S STATE IN THE BIG DATA MATURITY MODEL IMPACTS OF BIG DATA CONCLUSION
3
Ü STATE OF DIGITAL DATA GLOBAL TRENDS 6 1 5 2 4 3
Smartphone online usage leaving rich data trail at every turn 1 Increased data storage capacity & cost Ü GLOBAL TRENDS 5 Only a fraction of the potential value of data and analytics are captured 2 Data has gained tremendous richness and diversity 4 Data is structured & unstructured 3 Data volume doubles every 3 years
4
DATA ECOSYSTEM Data Generation and Collection: The source and platform where data are initially captured. Data Aggregation: Process and platforms for combining data from multiple sources. Data Analysis: The gleaning of insights from data that can be acted upon. Data Infrastructure: The hardware and software associated with data management 4
5
The Big Data
6
Characteristics of Big Data
Volume Big Data Velocity Big Data Variety Variability Big Data Veracity Capacity
7
BIG DATA CHARACTERISTICS Volume
The size of the data determines the value and potential insight - and whether it can actually be considered big data or not Volume The type and nature of the data. This helps people who analyze it to effectively use the resulting insight. Variety In this context, the speed at which the data is generated and processed to meet the demands and challenges Velocity Inconsistency of the data set can hamper processes to handle and manage it. Variability Database must have the capacity to fit into almost endless sequences of search patterns and queries without performance degradation Capacity Veracity The quality of captured data can vary greatly, affecting accurate analysis. 7

ACTIONABLE ANALYTICS FROM BIG DATA
Descriptive - What happened? - What is happening? Diagnostic - Why did it happen? - What key relationships? Predictive - What will happen? - What if? How risky? Prescriptive - What should happen? - How can I optimize? 8

BIG DATA MATURITY MODEL
Business Monitoring Business Insights Business Optimization Data Monetization Business Metamorphosis To understand your position in exploiting big data and analytics to power business models Provides a roadmap for integration of data and analytics into business models Framework against which adoption of big data can be measured 9
10
BIG DATA MATURITY MODEL
Business Metamorphosis: Leverages data, analytics, and insights to metamorphose businesses. Major shift in business model Data Monetization: Seek to create new sources of revenue – selling data or insights – into new markets, products, services etc. Business Optimization: Build on insights uncovered in the Business Insights phase by applying prescriptive analytics to optimize key business processes Business Insights: Expansion of data assets with transactional and operational data, coupled with new internal data sources Business Monitoring: Applying data warehousing and Business Intelligence techniques and tools to monitor the organization’ business performance 10

Enrolled 17 million Nigerian Citizens & Printed 1 million eID Cards
NIMC’S STATE IN THE BIG DATA MATURITY MODEL Enrolled 17 million Nigerian Citizens & Printed 1 million eID Cards Business Monitoring Business Insights Business Optimization Data Monetization Business Metamorphosis NIMC is applying data warehousing and Business Intelligence (BI) techniques and tools to monitor ongoing business performance. NIMC provides access to the data through Verification Service – a form of Data Monetization Creating reports and dashboards that monitor current state of business, and alert key stakeholders with pertinent information whenever special ‘out of bound’ performance situations occur. 15
