11 TO FAILURE You do not come dramatically, with dragons That rear up with my life between their paws And dash me butchered down beside the wagons, The horses panicking; nor as a clause Clearly set out to warn what can be lost, What out-of-pocket charges must be borne Expenses met; nor as a draughty ghost That's seen, some mornings, running down a lawn. It is these sunless afternoons, I find Install you at my elbow like a bore The chestnut trees are caked with silence. I'm Aware the days pass quicker than before, Smell staler too. 19 Some talking directly to failure.
Larkin is saying that failure does not just show up dramatically one day but instead it creeps in and buries itself in him until one day he happens to notice it is there. The poet treats Failure as if it were a person or creature, which is personification. He also uses simile when he writes, “I find, Install you at my elbow like a bore”. It seems as though the poet is almost talking to a person he has known a while but doesn’t like. The tone is regretful. The language in the first stanza very loud and dramatic. It almost seems as if he is angry. The shift comes in the end where he begins to seem more regretful. The theme of the poem is that failure happens and can often go unnoticed. The poet describes this throughout the poem using figurative language and exaggeration. The theme of the poem is failure. Failure is not out of the ordinary. Failure is simply to realize that there has been no point to your life, and the regret that accompanies it.
