Equations and Expressions
2
Inverse (Opposite) Operations
Addition (+) Multiplication (●) Division ( / ) Subtraction (-) Division ( ∕ )
3
Expressions vs. Equations
(just a statement) (always has an “=“ sign) x - 2 x - 2 = 0 5x + 3 5x + 3 = 18 4(x +10) 4(x + 10) = 50
4
You Tell Me: Expression or Equation?
5
Do the Inverse (Opposite) Operation
One-Step Equations Do the Inverse (Opposite) Operation What you do to one side… you MUST do to the other! x – 3 = 2 x = 5
6
Think, Pair, Share Workbook Page 45 and 47 Pg 45: Problems 1, 2, 3
You will have 5 minutes to complete these problems. Then you will share your answers with your partner. If you got different answers, discuss why and see if you can agree on one answer.
7
Two-Step Equations Do the inverse (opposite) operation
(Addition or Subtraction First) Do the inverse (opposite) operation (Multiplication or Division Second) What you do to one side… you MUST do to the other side! 2x + 3 = 15 2x = 12 x = 6
8
Exception to the Rule
9
Think, Pair, Share Workbook Page 49 Problems 2, 8, 21, 23
You will have 6 minutes to complete these problems. Then you will share your answers with your partner. If you got different answers, discuss why and see if you can agree on one answer.

14
Combine Like Terms 1. 12c + 8 – 2 + 4c – c 12c + 4c – c + 8 – 2 15c m + 4m m m + 4m – 12m +6 -7m – x – 2x + 5x 6x – 2x + 5x + 22 – 14 9x + 8
15
Multi-Step Equations Let’s take what we learned last unit (distributive property and combining like terms) and apply it to solving an equation!
16
The Ol’ Distributive Property…it’ll getcha every time!!!!
3(x-2) m(4+2) -(x+4) 6x(3 -5) -4(x-6)
17
The Ol’ Distributive Property…it’ll getcha every time!!!!
3(x-2) = 3x-6 m(4+2) = 4m +2m = 6m -(x+4) = -x-4 6x(3 -5) = 18x – 30x = -12x -4(x-6) = -4x + 24
18
Combine Like Terms Terms MUST be the SAME VARIABLE to the SAME POWER in order to be combined! Constants (numbers with no variables) can be combined!
19
Let’s Practice m + 4(2m – 3) = -3 m + 8m – 12 = -3 9m -12 = -3 +12 +12
9m = 9 m = 1
20
Whiteboard Practice -20 = -4x – 6x
21
Whiteboard Practice 14 = -(p – 8)
22
Whiteboard Practice -3(4x + 3) + 4(6x +1) = 43
23
Exit Ticket Which example is correct
Exit Ticket Which example is correct? Write three to five sentences explaining why you chose A or B. 4(2x + 8) = 24 8x + 8 = 24 8x + 32 = 24 8x = -8 8x = 16 x = -1 x = 2
