“Jesus’ Humanity…?!” (part 1)
Hebrews 2:5-9
2
Superiority complex
3
Inferiority complex
5
Isn’t the incarnation an indication that God was forced to go to “plan B” or even “plan C”? Isn’t the incarnation a handicap rather than a sign of superiority?
6
Remember the warning given in Hebrews 2:1-4 – the warning to “WATCH”, to give careful attention least we drift or neglect our great salvation?
7
Purpose: to better understand the Son’s superiority to angels is not contradicted by His humanity
8
I God Gave Man DOMINION (VV 5-8a)
A. The World to Come B. One Has Testified
9
David, the inspired psalmnist is reflecting on the glories of the creation and on God’s dealings with man…
10
Genesis 1:26 “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’”
11
Genesis 1:28 “God blessed them and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’”
12
II Man LOST that Dominion (V 8b)
A. We Do Not See B. “Yet” Speaks of Hope
13
III Jesus RESTORES that Dominion (v 9)
A. Made Lower Than Angels for a While B. Because of Suffering Death He was Crowned C. Tasted Death for Every Man
14
Thus, the death of Jesus had cosmic significance – it ultimately reversed the effects of sin on the whole creation, something to be seen and realized at the end of time.
15
Dr. John N. Rosen pioneered a new treatment for the severely mentally ill. There were some catatonic patients in his ward, people so out of it they simply curled up on their beds in the fetal position and refused to acknowledge reality…
16
Jesus calls Satan “the Prince of the world” (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11)
Jesus calls Satan “the Prince of the world” (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11). Satan disguises himself as “an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14).
17
Summary and Conclusion:
Satan has no right to rule over this world. He is a usurper. He temporarily takes that which belongs to Christ and he certainly takes the power of man… No the humanity of Christ did not make Him inferior, nor did it handicap Him. The humanity of Christ enabled Him to restore dominion to you and me once and for all!
