Matter and Energy in the Environment
Chapter 5
2
Bellringer. How do the flamingos survive?
How do the flamingos depend on the nonliving things in the photo on page 704? How might the flamingos interact with the living things in their environment?
3
What do you think? Agree or Disagree. Why?
The air you breathe is mostly oxygen. Living things are made of mostly water.

Lesson 1: Abiotic Factors Vocabulary
Ecosystem: all the living things and nonliving things in a given area Biotic Factor: the living things in an ecosystem Abiotic Factor: the nonliving things in an ecosystem Climate: average weather conditions in an area over time Atmosphere: the layer of gases that surrounds the Earth. System: a set of things working together as parts of a mechanism or an interconnecting network
5
List Abiotic and Biotic Factors in appropriate columns
ABIOTIC FACTORS: Sunlight Wind Air Climate Temperature Water Atmosphere Soil Rocks Mud BIOTIC FACTORS: Humans Animals Bacteria Cells Fungi Insects Trees Plants Flowers
6
What is an ecosystem? Vary in size: forest, lake, under a rock
All organisms need biotic and abiotic factors in order to survive Abiotic and Biotic factors depend on one another. If one part is disturbed the others can be affected
7
Abiotic Factors The Sun Climate Temperature
Source of almost all energy on Earth Provides Warmth and Light Affects Climate and Temperature Conditions include: temperature, moisture, and wind. Influences where organisms live Influences where organisms can survive Temps on Earth vary
8
Abiotic Factors Continued…
Atmosphere Water Soil Made of rock, water, air, minerals and remains of living things. Home for many organisms Bacteria breaks down dead plants/animals returning nutrients to soil Insects make tunnels allowing air and water to move through All life on Earth requires water for life processes such as growing/reproduces Living things are about 70% water All ecosystems must contain water to support life Mostly made of nitrogen/oxygen Provides living things with oxygen and protects from harmful rays from the Sun
