1 Global Warming and Climate Change

2 Polar Bears Starving As Arctic Ice Vanishes
Polar bears require more food than previously thought.

3 Greenland is the biggest island on Earth and the least-densely populated country, with only around 57,000 residents. Most of the inhabited places are found along the western coast; a thick ice sheet covers the interior of the country. Scientists are growing extremely concerned that global warming is melting the ice too quickly.

4 Earth's long-term warming trend continues, and 2017 now ranks as one of the top three hottest years on record, according to a report released today (Jan. 18) by NASA and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

5 Analysis by NASA scientists showed that 2017 was the second warmest year on record, with global average temperatures across land and sea surfaces measuring 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit (0.90 degrees Celsius) above average temperatures from 1951 to 1980.

6 Sea ice then started to shrink five days earlier than the average, reaching its summer minimum on Sept. 13, at 1.8 million square miles (4.6 million square km). That extent was slightly greater than the 2016 minimum and 25 percent lower than the average.

7 Are Antarctica's Ice Sheets Near a Climate Tipping Point?

8 Nearly all coal emissions need to stop by 2050 to avoid accelerating ice loss that could lead to 4 feet of sea level rise this century, scientists say.

11 Hot news from the Antarctic underground

12 The researchers say the work
Costing tens of billions of dollars a time – is urgently needed to prevent polar glaciers melting and raising sea levels. That would lead to major inundations of low-lying, densely populated areas, such as parts of Bangladesh, Japan and the Netherlands.

14 Sea Level Rise Is Accelerating: 4 Inches Per Decade (or More) by 2100

16 Europe Saw a Spike in Extreme Weather Over Past 5 Years

17 Are Cities and Countries Prepared?

18 Most Vulnerable at Most Risk
Certain people and communities are especially vulnerable, including children, the elderly, the sick, the poor, and some communities of color.

19 Prevention Provides Protection
Public health actions, especially preparedness and prevention, can do much to protect people from some of the impacts of climate change. Early action provides the largest health benefits. As threats increase, our ability to adapt to future changes may be limited.

20 Responses Have Multiple Benefits
Responding to climate change provides opportunities to improve human health and well-being across many sectors, including energy, agriculture, and transportation. Many of these strategies offer a variety of benefits, protecting people while combating climate change and providing other societal benefits.
