Assesses the New Jersey Student learning standards
Reading Literature – Craft and Structure RL.3.6. Distinguish their own point of view from that of the narrator or those of the characters. RL.5.6. Describe how a narrator’s or speaker’s point of view influences how events are described. RL.7.6. Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different characters or narrators in a text. RL Analyze a particular point of view or cultural experience reflected in a work of literature from outside the United States, drawing on a wide reading of world literature. RL Analyze a case in which grasping a point of view requires distinguishing what is directly stated in a text from what is really meant (e.g., satire, sarcasm, irony, or understatement). PARCC Released Item 2017 – Grade 5 You have read passages from Part 1 and Part 2 of Freddy in Peril. Explain how Freddy’s point of view influences how the events in the passages are described. Be sure to use details to support your answer from both Freddy in Peril, Part 1 and Part 2.

Instruction to assessment TO instruction
WHAT? We teach students the foundational knowledge needed for them to master rigorous content, think critically, apply their knowledge in order to solve problems, and develop and communicate their point of view. WHY? These skills are critically important in college and the workplace. HOW IS IT MEASURED? PARCC is only one measure at one point in time in the school year. What does our data identify?
Many areas of growth are two or three times the state average. ELA – overall improvement in all grades Percentage range of students who achieved Levels 4 & 5 from grades % to 88.5% Grade 3 up 23% from 2016 Math – improvement in many grades Percentage range of students who achieved Levels 4 & 5 from grades 3 – high school 41.2% to 85.9% Grade 3 up 22% from 2016 Grade 4 up 11% from 2016 Grade 5 down 5% from 2017, down 8% from 2016 Grade 7 up 14% from 2016 Grade 8 – 85 students tested; 70 students took Algebra I Geometry – down 12% from 2017, down 3% from 2016 Algebra II – up 35% from 2016 A continued focus is needed to support students with disabilities.

Interventions Supervisors (ELA, Math, Science) guide teachers in analyzing data from PARCC in addition to on-going unit and benchmark assessments Provide resources Unpack standards (look at all parts) Supplemental Instruction (Title I) at Kiel, Stonybrook, PRM Guided Study in all schools Professional development across all areas Build resilience and grit Mindfulness Self Regulation Strategies Conflict Resolution Procedures at each school for identifying students in need of assistance – I&RS

Some changes The online platform will remain. Will now be referred to as, New Jersey Student Learning Assessments – ELA (NJSLA-ELA) New Jersey Student Learning Assessment – Mathematics (NJSLA-M) Changes in time ELA reduced to 2 units in all grades Math reduced to 3 units in grades 3-5, units in grades 6-8 remain at 3 (minutes reduced to 60) Algebra I reduced to 2 units High School Assessment Component: ELA 9 and 10 End-of-course math in 9th and 10th (Algebra I and Geometry or Geometry and Algebra II) Graduation Requirements: Must take and pass ELA 10 and Algebra I Alternate pathways possible for those who do not pass
