2
EPOC Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption
Represents the extra volume of O2 consumed following exercise that enables the body to fully recover
3
EPOC Why?...... Beginning of exercise not enough O2 to use the aerobic system for energy, so work anaerobically – an O2 deficit occurs Takes 2-3mins for the aerobic system to ‘kick in’ even during low intensity
4
EPOC Exercise Recovery VO2 (L/min) O2 deficit O2 Debt
5
EPOC Fast Recovery O2 Deficit Slow Recovery VO2 (L/min) Recovery
Exercise
6
2 stages of EPOC Stage 1: Fast recovery (alactacid) 2-3 mins
Stage 2: Slow recovery (lactacid) ~ 2 hours
7
Fast Recovery (Alactacid)
2-3 mins Consumed O2 helps to: 1. Resaturate myoglobin 2. Provide aerobic energy to resythesise ATP & PC stores
8
Slow Recovery (Lactacid)
2-3 hrs O2 consumed helps to: 1. Remove Lactic Acid 2. Maintain high HR and breathing rate 3. Replenish muscle glycogen stores (dependent on exercise & CHO intake) 4. Regulate body temperature
