3 Roles & Responsibilities
Our role is to provide safe and fair racing Our primary concerns are the safety of competitors and other participants and the fairness of racing We should always act in accordance with the code of conduct

4 Career Path for Umpires
Club level – seminar or online test then on the job training and assessment Member association level – written test and competency assessments National level– written and practical examinations plus competency assessment International – recommendation by country plus written and practical examinations

5 Code of Conduct Promotion of appropriate behaviours
Environment for safe and fair racing Respect for others and their property No harrassment No discrimination Compliance with grievance procedures

6 Safety Enforce training & racing traffic rules
Follow safe work practices Know and comply with safety regulations Report all unsafe acts and conditions Keep your work area safe, tidy & clean Ensure you have working equipment

7 Required Personal Items
Program – provided by regatta c’tee Writing instruments & clip board Watch Sun screen, hat & sunglasses Appropriate clothing for weather conditions Binoculars and some basic tools for repairs Extra fluids

8 Judging Adjudicate and record the order crews cross the finish line
Acknowledge crews as they pass the line Check for well being of crews/protests Skill – know race order/focus on the line Judges box organisation Equipment – Finish line, radio, white flag, megaphone, finish bell/siren

9 Marshalling Usually assisting starter marshalling crews for a start
Commands - name crew then direction Equipment – megaphone & radio Ensure compliance with traffic rules, boat safety and uniform requirements Communicate with starter with any queries

10 Radio Protocol Emergency call – “Rescue, rescue, rescue, name position on the course, brief description of issue” If that call is made only the referee and person making that call can use radio Normal usage – name person being called then state caller name, await response then continue call.

11 Control Commission Responsibilities include compliance with:
Boat safety requirements bow balls heel tie downs Traffic rules compliance Athlete/cox weighing Uniforms Crew identity

12 Basic Umpiring Responsible for the safety & fairness of race (or section of race) under umpire’s control Assesses suitability of weather Direct (but not steer) crews using white flag & megaphone Red flag is used to stop a race Clear race at finish and check well being of competitors Equipment – flags, megaphone, bell, radio
