Fascism = new, militant political movement emphasizing loyalty to state and obedience to leader Promises to revive economy Punish those responsible for hard times Restore order and national pride Nations will fight for power– peaceful states will be conquered by more powerful states

Benito Mussolini promised to revive economy and rebuild Italian military Muss. gains support of middle and upper classes by playing up threat of a workers’ revolt 30,000 fascists march to Rome – demand B.M. be put in power King Emmanual III complied, seeing he had no other choice

Mussolini in charge Once in power, B.M. makes the following changes:
Abolishes democracy Outlaws all political parties except Fascists Secret police jail opponents Govt. censors radio stations and publications Wanted to control economy by forming alliance between Fascists and industrial owners/land owners Despite all of this, B.M. never gained total control that had been achieved by Stalin or Hitler
