1. Cuban Independence and Panama Canal

2. 1901 Platt Amendment
Amendment designed to control Cuban independence. Did four things
1) Cuba can make no alliances without U.S. approval
2) Cannot go into debt beyond its capacity to pay
3) U.S. can interfere in affairs
4) U.S. can maintain military bases on island (Guantanamo Bay)
This act makes Cuba dependent on U.S.

3. American Help Lenard Wood- military governor and medical doctor
helped build roads, hospitals, in Cuba
U.S. does intervenes three different occasions
By 1920, U.S. has $1 Billion in investments on islands

4. Panama Canal
Building canal greatly reduce sea route to West Coast of U.S.
Spooner Act- act said we would build canal in Panama
Colombia controlled area of Panama
U.S. negotiates with Colombia to build in Panama
Offered $10 million and later $15 million to build
Roosevelt says no to amount and incites revolution in Panama
Canalimony- end up paying Colombia $25 million for its loss of Panama.

9. Haiti Troubled country that is poor and overpopulated
1907 Revolution occurs
1915- Marines sent to island after leader is murdered
Marines take over customs house and occupied for almost 30 years
Made them pay their bills.
