Prefixes: pro = forward, before retro = backwards New Words: Procrastinate- to put off doing something until later Profess- to come forward and make a public statement Prologue-the introduction of a book Promontory- the highest point of land that projects over a body of water Propensity- a natural tendency to do something

Bell Ringer Irony: when something happens that is usually the opposite of something else that recently happened Example: Ms. Fritz liked a picture of a deer on Facebook. Twenty minutes later, she hit a deer with her car. That was ironic. ***Write down on example of a time that you experienced irony, or make one up

Notes on Irony: Irony is used to express ideas in two ways
Verbal Irony: the speaker/writer shows a contrast between what is said and what is meant Example: “What a great guy you are” Mario said as his brother ate the last piece of cake. He said his brother was a great guy, but his tone of voice & the expression on his face show his real meaning. Dramatic Irony: the reader knows more about the actual situation than the characters do. Situational Irony: things turn out to be the opposite of what is expected

Notes on Jargon Jargon: the use of phrases that wouldn’t normally be found in dictionaries Jargon is a special use of words that only certain people or groups of people use. For example, in some places instead of saying soda they say ‘Pop’.
