MIG/MAG Welding

Who is this course aimed at?
This course is aimed at people who are interested in developing their engineering skills; maybe for a hobby, or extension of skills in your work place or even beginning a change in your career.

What skills will you develop?
You will be working predominately in mild steel to become competent in welding the three most common weld joints; T fillet, lap, and butt. You will be using the MIG/MAG welding technique and learning how to prepare, weld, and inspect your work using dye penetrant testing and nick break testing. Each task will be written up in a log book together with a set of underpinning knowledge questions to be answered.

What you’ll need to provide.
You will need to bring your own; steel toe capped boots. overalls. Please also bring basic stationary equipment such as a pen, pencil, rule and eraser. We will provide all other safety equipment, and tools, equipment and materials etc.

Tools and Equipment. You will mainly use the following tools and equipment; MIG/MAG welding equipment. Pillar drill. Hand files. Hacksaw. Vice. Drill bits Scribes/centre punches. Rules. Non destructive testing methods (dye penetrant).

Rules and Regulations. Whilst in the workshop you will come under the following regulations; Health and Safety Act 1974 – Covers legislation. The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations – lighting, heating etc The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations – PPE, barrier cream etc. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 – Reduce risk of injury during lifting operations.
