City Profile 1. B) Characteristics of the City: Colombo is a busy and vibrant commercial hub with a mixture of modern life and colonial buildings. Colombo is the 32nd most densely populated city in the world (20,405 people/km²). The main city is home to a majority of Sri Lankan’s Corporate Offices. Famous landmarks in Colombo include Galle Face Green, Old Parliament Complex, Beira Lake, Colombo Racecourse and new addition like Colombo Lotus Tower and Altair Residencies. The Colombo Metropolitan area has a GDP of US $ 48 billion or 40% of the GDP, although it accounts for only 6% of the country's geographic area and 25% of the national population. 9/22/2019 CITIES

City Profile 1. B) Characteristics of the City (continued): Colombo is a multi-religious, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural city. The population of Colombo is a mix of Sinhalese, Sri Lankan Tamils, and Sri Lankan Moor. Colombo's climate is fairly temperate all throughout the year. Rainfall in the city averages around 2,500 mm a year. Areas of Colombo City is numbered from 01 to 15. 9/22/2019 CITIES

2. City’s Issues/Needs: City Profile
According to censes department information about 54% of the Colombo city population lives in huts, sheds or in places designated an unsuitable for humans. According to statistics about 1000 Acres of state land are being occupied by these people. An estimated 65,000 families in Colombo alone live in underserved settlements. Due to Commercial opportunities more & more people are moving into the city. Releasing this state land by constructing cost effective housing for the underserved and building new affordable housing for the housing demand is the key problem. 9/22/2019 CITIES

Institutional Structure of the City
3. Description of City’s Governance Structures for Housing Sector: The governance structures for city’s housing sector is Urban Development Authority (UDA) and National Housing Development Authority (NHDA). UDA was established on first of Oct. 1978, under Urban Development Authority Law No. 41 of 1978 as an "authority to promote integrated planning and, implementation of economic, social and physical development in certain areas". NHDA has been established by National Housing Development Authority Act No. 17 of 1979 to carry out housing development activities in Sri Lanka. 9/22/2019 CITIES

B) Specific Action (continued): Madampitiya Henamulla Housing Project - Four number of 15 story housing blocks which comprises 941 housing units for underserved living in Colombo Metropolitan Area. - This Is executed in collaboration with CEA, Fire Department, CEB and Water Board by a private party as a PPP Project. 9/22/2019 CITIES

6. Policy Framework: SDG11 (Sustainable Development Goals 11) - Colombo Urban Regeneration Project. The project objective is to improve the housing condition of low- income communities and increase Land use efficiency in Colombo through investments in the construction of affordable housing and the redevelopment of land. 9/22/2019 CITIES

7. Opportunities: Sri Lanka is included as a member under Ramsar Convention. The Rich Greenery and set of Old Dutch Canals in the City. Availability of developable lands. New Port City Development Works, to reclaim 6 km² of level from sea. New outer circular road network connecting the old road network. 9/22/2019 CITIES
