Local 1000 Communications In San Diego, this past December, the Communications department made a commitment to expand our Communications vehicles and increase our member audience. We want to tell you that we have done just that. We know that communication is key especially regarding important issues like furloughs, your contract, and the upcoming election. But we also want to show you that…there’s Labor communications and then there’s Local 1000 Labor communications. We take it to the next level. We want to show you how and ask you to help us increase member audience even more.
2
Traditional Labor Communications
Every labor union does traditional communications. Here at Local 1000 we even take the traditional to the next level.

Publications Update Top news stories Weekly – Every Wednesday Statewide All Members Handed out One Voice Top news stories Top 5 questions Weekly – Every Tuesday or Wednesday Statewide Stewards Staff ed New in 2009 The heart of our communications is Union Update. I’ve been here for five years and at that time it was a four pager. Now it’s 2 pages and a bit more dense but I think better. One Voice was started in 2009 and it is specifically for Stewards and Staff so they can stay updated on what’s happening. We actually had staff not reading update – can you believe it?? And staff not even going to our website. Hard to believe….but I’m sure you won’t have that problem.

Departmental Newsletters
Publications Departmental Newsletters Unlike traditional publications, we breakdown our audiences and publish specialized information What’s not here is the SCIFLink, which is also a newsletter
5
Media Relations Our media relations has helped to incresaes our audience externally. We’ve gone from 71 mentions in 2007 to 847 mentions in 2009. This includes newspaper articles, archived radio & TV scripts, wire service stories and blogs that mention or quote SEIU Local This also includes most but not all stories quoting Local 1000 state employees who not clearly identified as Local 1000 members: For example, DMV worker Roland Becht, FTB employee Renee Lee or state workers Carrie Ann Quintos, etc Does not include reposts.

Bulletin Board Kits So, there have always been bulletin board kits at worksites…we just took them to a new level. We made a bunch of arrows, and signs and encourage DLC presidents and stewards to use their kits to make a decent board. This one is from DLC 747 out of the Bay Area. It’s a worksite in San Rafael. Talk to Susan Small and Jason Sandavol about updates.

Targeted 70,081 is traditional in the sense that all unions now send s out. We currently have xx address. That doesn’t mean we have 70k of the 95k state workers. About 25k of those are home addresses. So we probably only have about 50k addresses. So we will be asking the field to collect more so we are able to reach more folks.

The Next Level So, let’s talk about the many different ways we communicate with Members. Most importantly, we want to show and tell what we’ve done and to tell you how you can help us help you.

Interactive Website Do you remember the website we had 5 years ago. Oh boy. The one on the left is our current website and it is 150% better then the one before. The one on the right is the Web 3.0 and will be unveiled as soon as YW sees it and we preview it to Council next weekend but it’s 100% better than our current one. It’s looks better and cleaner, it has great additions that the old site didn’t have that makes it user friendly. And it’s interactive. A few of you collegues had the opportunity to have a sneak peak and I think overall they liked it – yes?? The also gave very good suggestions and additions that we will try to incorporate before the launch.

iTunes, Facebook and Twitter
There’s no doubt that we have to continue to do traditional media. But we have to position ourselves to do any new media that comes up also. So, Local 1000 has an itune account so that our programs are avialable by podcast. We have a facebook account and I encourage you all to become fans. We also have a twitter account. So read our tweets.
