Fig. 1 Cancer-related fatigue is a multifactorial symptom with various contributors, such as progressive cancer, cancer treatments, pro-inflammatory cytokines, direct neurologic dysfunction by cytotoxic treatments, sleep disruption, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis disturbances, deconditioning, nutritional compromise, and mood and emotional disorders. Many of these contributors may be associated with each other. We hypothesized that subjective assessment of fatigue correlates with objective measures of patients' muscle and nutritional status.
