1 Mohawk Industries Feasibility Study of Mohawk Industries Water Bottle Recycling Program with Automated Compactor/Baler Brody Cook, Chris Yeager, & Parker Cook

2 Final Design Review Project High-Level Overview
Mohawk Industries wants to study the feasibility of providing plastic water bottle compactor/balers at outdoor sport complexes to recycle the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) which they use as a raw material to extrude carpet yarn fiber.

3 Final Design Review Project Gantt Chart and Budget
No budget expenses

4 Final Design Review High-Level Project Status
Define Program and Requirements Current and Future State Evaluation Material Handling Study Logistical Decision Analysis Technical Requirements Process Flow of Plastic Bottles Cost Justification of Compactor : Complete : In - Progress

5 Process Flow Charts Mohawk Current/Future State
A ($ / lb) B ($ / lb) B ($ / lb) A ($ / lb) A ($ / lb.) is significantly larger than B ($ / lb.)

6 Final Design Review PET Collection
Amount of Plastic Accumulated from LakePoint’s Facility per Year

7 Final Design Review Design Requirements
Minimum Success Criteria Determine feasibility of Mohawk’s Compactor/baler Program on a 2.5 year payback period. Meets or beats price A ( $ / lb.) Meets or beats price B ( $ / lb.) Technical Goals The compactors shall compact plastic by at least 85%. Transporting the recycled bottles shall be at the lowest market cost. The chosen transportation shall be available for use once every two months.

8 Final Design Review Project Solution Alternatives
Possible solutions were U-Haul, Mohawk Trucking, USPS, and UPS.

9 Final Design Review Material Handling & Transportation Load Limits
Requirement – Compactor/Baler compacts 85% of recycling PET bottles’ volume. Rather than gross out, the tractor trailers cubes out at 36,000 lbs. of compacted PET.

10 Final Design Review Feasibility on Current PET Capacity (B$/lb)

11 Final Design Review Feasibility on Future PET Capacity (B$/lb)

12 Final Design Review Compactor Price

13 Final Design Review Future Improvements and Conclusion
Reduce and find accurate compactor expense Explore other facilities that produce more PET Mercedes Benz SunTrust Park The Compactor/Baler Program is not currently feasible at LakePoint Sports Complex. The only cost savings would be LakePoint’s material handling expenses.
